On November 29, 2017, at around 2:17 p.m., Placentia Police received a call reporting a hand grenade found in a box of donations at the Goodwill Thrift Store, 1101 E. Imperial Highway, Placentia, CA 92870 (cross street of Rose Drive). Placentia Police Officers responded and assisted with evacuating surrounding businesses in the shopping center. The Orange County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad was requested to respond. Orange County Fire Authority also responded, along with ambulances, as a precaution. Officers spoke with the Goodwill employees, who stated that an elderly female dropped off a box of donations and left. When the employees began going through the box a short time later, they discovered the grenade and called the police. The Bomb Squad made entry into the Goodwill store and retrieved the grenade without incident. The area was rendered safe at approximately 4:00 p.m. The grenade was transported away by the Bomb Squad.

On Friday November 24th at approximately 3:05 pm Placentia Police Officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of east Imperial Highway regarding an intoxicated man sitting in a vehicle with a handgun. While on the way to the call, we received information that family members were able to get the gun away from the subject, which turned out to be a B.B. gun that looked like a real handgun. Upon officers arrival, officers attempted a felony car stop ordering the driver out of the car. The driver refused to get out of the car and told officers that he was armed with another firearm. Over the next several minutes Officers attempted to convince the driver to exit the vehicle but he continued to refuse. Several Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Yorba Linda Station responded to assist us. During the incident the driver rolled up all of the windows and refused to communicate with the officers on scene. Due to the heavy tint on the vehicle, and the inability to see what the driver was doing, officers used less lethal munitions to shoot out the drivers side window. At that point, the driver decided he wanted to surrender. He exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. A search of the vehicle revealed another replica handgun which was located under the drivers seat. The driver was identified as Amado Pantoja, 50, of Placentia. He was charged with DUI and resisting arrest.
