UW Carbone Cancer Center
Description
The University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center is recognized throughout the Midwest and the nation as one of the leading innovators in cancer research, quality patient care and active community involvement. UW Carbone Cancer Center holds the unique distinction of being the only comprehensive cancer center in Wisconsin, as designated by the National Cancer Institute, the lead federal agency for cancer research.
An integral part of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, the Carbone Cancer Center unites more than 280 physicians and scientists who work together in translating discoveries from research laboratories into new treatments that benefit cancer patients. Our mission is primarily achieved through research programs that bring scientists together from many different disciplines.
More than 30,000 people are seen annually for diagnosis, therapy, follow-up care or consultations at UW Hospital and Clinics , as well as our other clinical locations. UW Hospital and Clinics is consistently in the top 25 of 50 hospitals providing the best cancer care and research efforts in U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Hospitals", which is published annually.
Daily we are reaching out to residents of Wisconsin and beyond - providing them with important health education messages. From technical assistance to educational programs, the Carbone Cancer Center provides a bridge between new research discoveries and their application in the community.

"There's something incredibly touching and rewarding about working with individuals as they face their mortality going through the challenging stages of cancer treatment. You meet people when they are most vulnerable, make a connection and work with them through this physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, and social struggle. While I have not personally had a cancer diagnosis, my friends and loved ones have, and I am grateful that I now can work to make a difference in my patients’ lives. I look forward to the opportunity I have to walk with them through their cancer journey and hope I can provide a spark of light and joy during their treatments." - Kay Wiedenbeck, RN #OncologyNursingMonth

"As a cancer survivor, I am passionate about helping to improve healthcare and enhancing the patient experience. I draw from my professional background as a healthcare executive and from my personal experiences as a patient. I believe in being your own advocate and taking control of your health. For me, that includes actively using MyChart (online patient portal), partnering with my providers and being direct about what I need and expect from my care team. I was fortunate to have a primary care doctor who took a keen interest in my family medical history (both my father and my brother had prostate cancer) and monitored my risk factors through regular testing. This proactive approach enabled early detection of cancer. After considering my options, I underwent radiation plus hormone treatment because research had shown that combination to be especially effective for men of color like me. I am very grateful to be cancer-free today and for the expert care I received at UW Health. Healthcare is complex and not easy to navigate; I want to help it become more patient-centered. Think about the language of healthcare, as one example – the jargon, acronyms and unfamiliar terminology – it’s not geared to the patient. There’s always room for improvement in communication and care coordination as well. That’s why I volunteer as a Patient and Family Advisor – to share what I have experienced and to be an active participant in devising solutions. Because when you are a patient, the little things ARE the big things, and everything matters." - Claude Gilmore, Volunteer/Patient and Family Advisor --- For Patient Experience Week, we’re featuring the experiences of our patients and families in their own words, as well as the perspectives of staff who work together to deliver a remarkable health care experience. #PXWeek #RemarkableHealthcare
