But when you get a sweet nuzzle from the nose of a dog, it’s even better. Pet therapy brings joy and comfort to the UMMC family, especially to patients both young and old.

There may be a link between having high blood pressure now and decreased brain health in the future. The findings of UMMC researchers were featured in two papers published by the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) to explain the influence of blood pressure on the future development of dementia and other cognitive impairments. When a tumor formed on the left side of her face, Violet Thompson’s dentist referred her to Dr. Ignacio Velasco Martinez, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at the School of Dentistry at UMMC, to remove the benign but bothersome tumor and help her get back to a normal life. During a 19 hour surgery, the tumor was removed, creating an ongoing bond between Thompson, Velasco Martinez, and a team of specialists. A personal experience with organ donation has given Miss Mississippi Mary Margaret Hyer the inspiration to make the gift of life her platform as she prepares for the Miss America competition. Hyer visited with the transplant team and chatted with patients awaiting a transplant or who received an abdominal organ during an Aug. 8 visit to UMMC.

Incoming UMMC School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences Ph.D students participated in the school’s first “white coat ceremony” last week. For Dr. Frank Han, a second-year fellow at UMMC, his interests go beyond his academic and professional career treating pediatric and adult congenital heart disease patients.
