Today, May 31st, is World Otter Day! With long, sleek, streamlined bodies and webbed feet, otters are born swimmers. They are found in waterways on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. They are often seen floating on their backs. Their thick fur traps air and makes them buoyant. Unfortunately, the fur is highly coveted, and otters have been hunted almost to extinction in many places. Otters are very social creatures. A group of otters is called a raft, according to the San Diego Zoo. They are also nocturnal and hunt at night. They also love to play. They like to slide off embankments into the water, wrestle, chase their tails and participate in other fun games. They are also very curious and like to investigate new things. Otters spend a good part of their day grooming themselves. They clean their fur by biting it and scratching it against rocks, or rubbing it on logs or grass. They actually have two layers of fur: a dense undercoat that traps air and a topcoat of long, waterproof hairs. Click the link below to learn how you can help with the conservation of these adorable animals! http://www.otter.org/Public/Events.aspx

World Turtle Day® | Home

Today, May 23rd, is World Turtle Day! American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization established in 1990 for the protection of all species of tortoise and turtle, is sponsoring its 17th annual World Turtle Day® on May 23. The day was created as an annual observance to help people celebrate and protect turtles and tortoises and their disappearing habitats around the world. Susan Tellem and Marshall Thompson, founders of ATR, advocate humane treatment of all animals, including reptiles. Since 1990, ATR has placed about 4,000 tortoises and turtles in caring homes. ATR assists law enforcement when undersize or endangered turtles are confiscated and provides helpful information and referrals to persons with sick, neglected or abandoned turtles. Sunday Fun Fact: 20,000 rats scurry across the checkerboard floors of the Karni Mata Rat Temple, getting tangled in each others tails and fighting for access to huge saucers of milk. Far from being regarded as vermin, the rats are venerated as the holy descendants of Karni Mata, who was worshiped as an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Durga during the 15th century. The story of how Karniu Mata's offspring took the form of rodents varies, but the most common version begins with her asking Yama, the god of death, to revive her drowned stepson. After first resisting, Yama gave in, promising that the boy and all of Karni Mata's descendants would be reincarnated as rats. Visitors to the temple are required to remove their shoes before walking inside. When shuffling among the droppings, spilled milk, and scrambling rodents, keep in mind that it is considered lucky for a rat to run across your foot. Another tip is to tread lightly. Temple rules state that if you accidentally step on one of the animals and kill it, you must replace it with a rat made of solid gold. Enjoy your Sunday Fun Fact!
