Description
To improve and enhance the health and well being of individuals and our community Community Memorial Hospital opened on July 27, 1958, as a 26-bed regional hospital. In 2004, CMH completed a $15 million building project, the largest renovation project since the hospital was built, and we continue to update our technology and improve our services. In 2008, CMH celebrated 50 years of service to our community. CMH currently employs 400 people and directly and indirectly contributes over $40 million to the regional economy.

Congratulations to area high school students who completed a yearlong Health Occupations class at CMH taught by Shelly Demers, Director of Staff Education and Infection Prevention and the Health Occupations Teacher at CMH. The class included a nursing assistant course and all students completed clinicals at SHCC, followed by the state nursing assistant test which each of them passed! Living Well with Diabetes workshops CMH is starting a new series of classes on Wednesday, June 7th called "Living Well with Diabetes." The classes will meet every week for 6 sessions lasting two and a half hours each session. These workshops are for individuals with Type 2 Diabetes and are designed to develop lifestyle strategies to improve overall well-being. Participants will learn about: ..healthy eating, nutrtion and exercise ..techniques to address frustration, fatigue, isolation and poor sleep ..how to work effectively with family and healthcare providers ..how to take control, manage the condition and enjoy life! Did you know that 1 in 25 adults have difficulty swallowing or chewing and that number increases to 1 in 10 after the age of 50? The condition is called dysphagia. If you are having difficulty chewing or swallowing, the Speech Therapy department at CMH can help. Symptoms of dysphagia include: drooling or poor oral management food or liquid remaining in the oral cavity after the swallow inabiliaty to maintain lip closure food or liquids leaking from the nasal cavity fullness in the neck pain when swallowing coughing during or after eating/drinking difficulty coordinating breathing and swallowing extra effort/time needed to chew or swallow There are additional symptoms that can be associated with this condition and if you would like more information, contact the Speech Therapy department at 218-878-7010.

The SHCC/CMH Alzheimer's Walk team is holding a bake sale right now at CMH in the area in front of the gift shop. Stop by and pick up some goodies for Mother's Day and help support this important cause. The bake sale goes until 11:30 this morning. While at the bake sale, stop in the gift shop to see all the new spring merchandise and register for a $50 gift certificate as part of the Mother's Day celebration!

At CMH/SHCC we are celebrating the many health care designations that are observed during the month of May by having a special treat for employees each day this week in the Riverside Cafe'. On Wednesday, it was the Celebrity Sandwich Smackdown featuring: The Charon Reuben-Paul Charon The Hot Brown-Jeff Brown Spicy Bill-Bill Bronniche Cheesy Ryan-Ryan Johns Employees were able to sample each sandwich and purchase tickets to vote on their favorite. Taking home the coveted Celebrity Sandwich Smackdown trophy is Ryan Johns whose Cheesy Ryan sandwich received the most votes!! Below from left: Ryan Johns-Smackdown winner, Paul Charon, Bill Bronniche and Jeff Brown All money raised from the Smackdown will go toward the dining experience of SHCC residents.
The Speech Therapy department at CMH treats a variety of disorders, including Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 1 in 68 children has been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It occurs in all racial, ethnic and socio-economic groups and is about 4.5 times more common in boys. If you have a loved one with Autism, the Speech Therapy department can help. Volunteers at CMH/SHCC were honored today at the annual Volunteer luncheon. They enjoyed a scrumptious lunch prepared by the Nutrtion Services staff, which was followed by a presentation on the history of the Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps. Executive Director, Rolf Hagberg, described the organization's work to restore historic structures and train young people in historic preservation methods. Thank you to all volunteers who give their time for the betterment our organization!
