We are thrilled to introduce the South Florida Museum's newest member of the family, our new Aquarium Director, Virginia Edmonds! Virginia says her new role at the Museum will allow her to do two of the things she's most passionate about: helping to rehabilitate manatees so they can be returned to the wild and helping others learn how they too can save manatees! Please give her a big 'WELCOME!' ☺️

Did you know that manatees, like their elephant relatives, replace their teeth throughout their lives?! (Elephants have 6 sets, while manatees continuously replace their teeth with no known limit.) Older teeth at the front fall out to make room for new teeth that grow in at the back of their mouth! #FunFactFriday

If you haven’t had a chance to stop by to see our newest rehabilitating manatee nicknamed “Lagoona,” we hope you will soon! Lagoona is a female estimated to be 2 to 2½ years old that was rescued May 29 from Mosquito Lagoon (hence her nickname) on Florida's east coast. She was found with large propeller wounds from her left shoulder to her skull and her prognosis when she arrived at SeaWorld's 1st stage manatee hospital facility was poor. But during her time in critical care at SeaWorld, they were able to treat her for infection and give her wounds time to heal. Now, she appears to be doing much better. Bringing her to the Museum should give her the time she needs to continue to heal and improve for her eventual return to the wild. The Museum's Stage 2 Manatee Rehabilitation Aquarium is the place where manatees come after their initial critical care needs have been met. Manatees can spend anywhere from a few months to more than a year at the Museum regaining their health before they are ready for release. Lagoona's injuries and rescue highlight the need for boaters to keep an eye out for manatees in area waterways – as well as the need for second stage manatee rehabilitation facilities like ours. Lagoona is the 34th manatee to rehabilitate at the South Florida Museum. Our Manatee Rehabilitation Aquarium is another one of the wonders to explore at South Florida Museum. Make a gift today to support the continued work of manatee conservation and rehabilitation. https://26965.blackbaudhosting.com/26965/Annual-Fund What to do if you encounter a sick, injured or dead manatee?
