City Employees Jina Faith (5 years), Diane Rosier (5 years), and Officer Gary Slot (30 years) were recognized for their years of service at last night's City Council Meeting. As an interesting side note, Ms. Rosier - who works as a 911 Telecommunicator - comes by her service career naturally. Both mom and dad are retired city employees. Combined, they have over 60 years of service to the citizens of Baytown.

At last night's City Council Meeting, Police Chief Keith Dougherty presented the Police Purple Heart Medal to Officer Robert Ramlal for his service on March 29, 2017. While responding to a theft call, Officer Ramlal and his partner contacted two subjects and attempted to take them into custody. As he attempted to remove a female subject from a vehicle, Officer Ramlal was viciously attacked by a large dog belonging to the suspect which leaped from the vehicle. He was severely bitten numerous times, forcing Officer Ramlal to use deadly force against the animal. As a result of the attack, Officer Ramlal’s left hand was severely injured, requiring extensive surgery and treatment. Therefore, in recognition for his bravery and willingness to risk his life in the service of the Citizens of Baytown, Officer Robert Ramlal is hereby awarded the Police Purple Heart.

On Saturday, March 31, the second Full Moon Hike of the month is scheduled at the Baytown Nature Center, 6213 Bayway Drive. Join a staff Naturalist at 7:30 pm for the 90 minute walk exploring habitats that are home to diurnal animals during the day, nocturnal animals at night and crepuscular animals at dusk. As darkness falls, the ‘night shift’ awakens to search for food, water, or perhaps a mate. A coyote howl or a great-horned owl calling for a mate is always a special treat. The hike is open to all ages; however, the ability to stay relatively quiet ensures a better chance of seeing wildlife, so this particular program is not the best for very young children. On the somewhat rare occurrence of two full moons in the same month, the second is labeled a blue moon. Blue moons can occur in any month except February. The name gave rise to the saying “Once in a blue moon,” describing something which transpires infrequently. Full Moon Hikes are free with regular admission to the nature center. Adult admission (13+) is $4 and children 5-12 and seniors 65+ is only $1. If you visit the nature center earlier in the day for picnicking or fishing, your day pass will be honored for the Full Moon Hike. Hikes are weather permitting. If in doubt, phone the nature center at 281-424-9198 or check the center’s Facebook page. For more information contact Crissy Bucher at 281-420-7130 or Christina.Butcher@baytown.org.
