Mary Greeley employees are incredibly proud of the work that’s put into the annual Holiday Bazaar. Every year the money raised is split between the Iowa Donor Network (IDN) and a local transplant recipient. The money given to IDN is used in various ways. One of these ways is the Heartprints pillow. This pillow is given to organ donor families and uses a small device to record the sound of a loved one’s heartbeat. #DoingWhatsRight

MARY GREELEY WELCOMES FIRST BABY OF 2018 #DoingWhatsRight She was going to be named in honor of a historic event, so it seems only right that her birthdate made a little history as well. Geneva Dyer’s family expected her to arrive on Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018. She showed up a few days early, though, and by doing so became the first baby of the New Year at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Micaela Dyer experienced some bleeding on the afternoon of Sunday, Dec. 31, prompting her and her husband, Dylan, to bundle up for a frigid drive to Ames from their home in Ankeny. McFarland Clinic midwife, Dawn Heaberlin, CNM, ARNP, MSN, examined Micaela and opted to induce labor. She went into labor later that evening and at 1:03 a.m. gave birth to Geneva, who weighed in at 7 lbs., 2 oz. “It was a two-hour labor and a bit intense,” said Micaela. “She came out like a rocket. It went from zero to 100 pretty quick,” added Dylan. Geneva’s name was chosen for its strong connections to Dyers’ faith. 2017 marked the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Anniversary celebrations were kicked off last year in Geneva, Switzerland, which was home to reformer and theologian John Calvin. “It felt like the perfect way to honor that,” said Dylan. Geneva has a sister, Nellie, who is 2 years old and was also delivered at Birthways at Mary Greeley by Heaberlin. “We had such a good experience here with Nellie and such a good experience with Dawn,” said Micaela on their choice to return to Mary Greeley.

For the third year in a row, members of the South Hamilton High School student council organized a toy drive for the month of December. Games, toys and stuff animals were collected during home basketball games and activities and then brought to Mary Greeley to be distributed to pediatric patients throughout the year. “Many people in our community utilize the services of Mary Greeley and they are excited to give contribute,” said Anna Ervin, Student Council Vice President. The student council collected over $1,000 of items. Council President Gabbi Struchen added, “This is a fun way to give back. We really enjoy this project and hope it continues for a long time.” Both Ervin and Struchen are seniors. #DoingWhatsRight
