We cordially invite you to the opening day of this new exhibit. An all-volunteer team has worked for months to assure that the exhibit is as historically accurate as possible and that the fifteen-foot long diorama is accurate to scale both horizontally and vertically. One member of the team is a professional surveyor, and his life-long hobby has been cartography; therefore, he worked tirelessly to construct Basin and mountains to exact proportions. Another member is an accomplished railroad enthusiast and led the team to depict the terrain realistically. Red, brown and white sand was brought from actual location, and rock from the lava flow near Carrizozo was crushed and put in place to represent the lava field left after the eruption of Little Black Peak approximately 5,000 years ago. The actual railroad abandonment map was used to construct the Alamogordo & Sacrament Mountains Railway portion of the diorama, which is also to scale. The unique railway was not only a challenge to construct in 1898 – 1903, but was also a thrill to the exhibit team as we learned about the endless challenges of building the railroad into the rugged 9,000-foot Sacramento Mountains. A multitude of historic photographs round out the presentation, along with an audio playback system which relates the high points of the exhibit features. Bring this invitation with you for free admission to the Museum A monograph based on the research done for the exhibit has been published and will be for sale in our Bookstore as will tee shirts with the A&SM Engine 101.
