I began my journey in the travel industry back in 2001 I was about to start my training with British Airways when the terrible events of 9/11 lead to a massive downturn in passenger numbers and unfortunately like many others I was made redundant. Thankfully I was then offered work with Airtours Holidays in their Direct sales team based in North Tyneside.
Whist working with Airtours I started off selling package holidays to European hot spots such as Spain, Italy, and Greece however within 6 months of starting work there I was offered a secondment with the training department looking after the product and destination knowledge of new recruits along with the systems training they needed to support their growth in the business.
Once the secondment was complete I went on to deal with twin centre bookings and honeymoons.
In 2003 I was offered the opportunity to work overseas for Airtours and took up a post in Mainland Spain on the Costa Daurada for the summer working in Salou, Cambrills, La Pineda and Sitges and then I spent the winter in Tenerife working in Playa de Las Americas and Puerto De La Cruz.
Working abroad was a fantastic learning tool for me as I now have a good understanding of how to get things to happen quickly whether it is with hoteliers airlines or even coach companies in the year I spent in Spain I found some great friends from both colleagues and customers but I also developed a no nonsense approach with suppliers to ensure my clients had the very best time possible with a smooth and pleasant travel experience.
Upon my return to the UK I moved to Manchester to start work with STA Travel which is where I learned the skill of creating more complex holiday bookings including tours for example flying to one country taking a tour and flying back from another. (take a look in my travel ideas page for more info on this).
I also learned how to create round the world bookings, although round the world sounds fairly straight forward there are many different options depending on where you wish to visit, the class of travel and the time frame available.
Again please ask me and I will put together the right option for you.
Whist at STA I also gained a in depth knowledge of different tours which are available, everything from mountain trekking in Nepal to cycling through the Andes to the more sedate river cruises in Egypt and China or even a small group adventure tour along route 66!
After I left STA I worked in the Business Travel sector, in many ways Business travel is very similar to leisure, however it is highly demeaning with most trips you book being budget sensitive and time critical.
During my time in business travel I have picked up a eye for a bargain and can now spot the best airfares around on the airlines of your choice and can decipher jargon to find the very best accommodation as close to your desired spot anywhere around the world.
To give you some examples of things I had to do, quite often id send people to Baghdad and Basra with only 24 to 48 hours notice which involved contacting the US army for onward transport to the green zone for engineering contractors.
