Protect your motorhome from tough winter weather Motorhomes are a major investment; however at this time of year using them can take a back seat during the colder weather and Christmas period. But it pays to look after your motorhome so that it can be ready for the off when the warm days return. Priorities are: Drain down the fresh and waste water tanks and leave the drain taps open Purge the plumbing system of water – don’t forget the bathroom shower head – and leave the taps open but turn off the pump! Wipe down surfaces so they are clean and don’t go mouldy in the damp conditions Open lockers so they can have air circulation Don’t forget to open the fridge to keep it fresh Remove soft furnishings such as scatter cushions or the extra cushions that make up beds Open curtains so the air can circulate round them Pull up silver screen blinds to trap warm air inside If you are able, connect to a mains hook-up and run a thermostat-controlled heater inside to keep the van above freezing Start the van and move it every couple of weeks to avoid flat-spotting the tyres Take it for a run to get good charge into the battery unless you have a trickle charge system Before you lay it up, clean the interior and then wash the exterior to minimise the risk of black streaks marking the paintwork If parking for a period, leave the handbrake off to avoid the mechanism seizing but chock the wheels and leave the van in gear (first if facing up hill, reverse if facing downhill or on a level surface) Remove all valuables just in case the van gets burgled Here at Freeborn Motorhomes, our technical team can offer a winter preparation service with a full drain down of fresh and waste tanks, with a pump purge, for £45.99.
