This morning, the Portsmouth and Southsea Voluntary Lifeguards provided safety cover for a triathalon on Southsea Seafront. Portsea Rescue 1, along with the RWC Jet Ski, paddleboards and kayaks all ensured the safety of the 200 swimmers as they endured the swim leg of their triathalon. Our new Inshore Rescue Boat, Portsea Rescue 1 was funded by a grant from the Government. Without it, we would not be able to continue our work on Southsea Seafront. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/lifeboat-charities-to-receive-1-million-grant-boost

With the reopening of South Parade Pier being a success, we would like to urge the public to keep it a success and stay safe on the structure, and certainly not to jump off or tombstone. Especially at low tide, the amount of water even at the end of the pier can reach depths of only a couple of meters, which can cause life changing injuries if you jump onto this. It is not only the pier that we warn people not to jump off, but also anywhere which is unsafe to do so. Seen in the video below is a group of teenagers jumping from Victoria Pier in Old Portsmouth. The video clips taken from on board Portsea Rescue 1 shows a very large group of people on the pier, and multiple jumpers who are jumping head first into only a few feet of water. Portsea Rescue 1 attended along with the 2 RWC (Jetski) craft to give safety advice, however this was not taken well by the group and stones were thrown at the boat and skis, putting our own well being at risk. If you do happen to end up in a situation where you see someone is injured by tombstoning, then please dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

One of our members and trainee crew is undertaking a charity walk with the proceedings going to ourselves. The walk is from Lee On The Solent to Hayling Island, a staggering 21 miles. This distance of shoreline is also the area of the Solent that we patrol, making it even more significant. Any sponsorship, small or large is greatly appreciated and helps the Portsmouth and Southsea Voluntary Lifeguards operating in Southsea. Good Luck to the walkers! https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/alexia-daniels1?utm_id=13
