Exciting new era for Kilgraston’s Chapel. Work is to start on the replacement and repair to nearly 100 bespoke windows at Kilgraston’s listed Chapel, which has come under threat from water ingress. The project will preserve and promote the architectural heritage and artistic treasures held within to a much wider community. Built in 1961 to the design of prominent Scottish architects, Gillespie, Kid and Coia, the Chapel houses many treasures including timeless stone sculptures of Hew Lorimer, the artist responsible for the artwork adorning the facade of the National Library of Scotland. Over the years the Chapel has enjoyed a few Scottish winters, meaning that the treasures housed within could be at risk if work is not undertaken. Once the work is completed the Chapel will be enhanced as a place of worship, a venue for community events, and a learning resource for local historians and those interested in Scottish architecture. The project has been made possible through generous donations from the Society of the Sacred Heart and local Diocese as well as grant funding from WREN’s FCC Scottish Action Fund, Scotland’s Churches and All Churches Trusts. Mrs Dorothy MacGinty, Headmistress, is excited that the project is now imminent. She says “We are extremely grateful to all of our project funders. Their generous contributions have enabled us to protect the fabric and heritage of the chapel that was under threat, and work towards enhancing its profile in the local community and beyond.”
