The Luttrell Psalter

Published by The Folio Society, London (2006) 624pp Facsimile edition of the Luttrell Psalter (British Library Additional MS 42130). Limited to 1480 copies this is number 434. Printed on Swiss-made Furioso paper and bound in blue Nigerian goatskin. Spine with label and raised bands, with a design by David Eccles using motifs from the Psalter blocked onto the cover using gold, silver and coloured foils. Accompanied by the commentary volume by Professor Michelle P. Brown in a buckram-bound solander box with a leather title label. In Near Fine condition. The vitality and humour of these illuminations, depicting the minutiae of medieval life from farming to fashion, have made this one of the most popular of all manuscripts. A truly stunning publication. Numerous medieval manuscripts can boast glorious illuminations and lavish decorations, but nowhere else is the reality of medieval life depicted with such vitality as in The Luttrell Psalter. With over 600 richly adorned pages the sheer number of illustrations is awesome, their quality breathtaking. Truly one of the foremost cultural treasure-troves of Western Europe, The Luttrell Psalter has been plundered for almost every book, documentary and film on the Middle Ages. The Luttrell Psalter is an illuminated psalter commissioned by Sir Geoffrey Luttrell (1276-1345), lord of the manor of Irnham in Lincolnshire, written and illustrated on parchment circa 1320–1340 in England by anonymous scribes and artists. Along with the psalms (beginning on folio 13 recto), the Luttrell Psalter contains a calendar, canticles, the Mass and an antiphon for the dead. The pages vary in their degree of illumination, but many are richly covered with both decorated text and marginal pictures of saints and Bible stories, and scenes of rural life. It is considered one of the richest sources for visual depictions of everyday rural life in medieval England. The Psalter was acquired by the British Museum in 1929 for £31,500 from Mary Angela Noyes, wife of the poet Alfred Noyes, with the assistance of an interest-free loan from the American millionaire and art collector J. P. Morgan. It is at present in the collection of the British Library in London, since the separation of the Library from the British Museum.
