Comrades! In August, from the 3rd to the 5th day, we will mark the death of Tom Dunn, Patriot and Hedgeschool Master at that old spot by the river, right well known to you and me. Take your pikes from the thatch, stiffen your jabots, shake out your petticoats and prepare to rally to the cry of ‘Liberté! Fraternité! Égalité!’ On behalf of the Directory, Pike Sergeant Fearon

The annual tribute to the memory of Tom Dunn will take place after 11.30 Mass on Sunday morning at the patriot's graveside in Kilbroney. Two of the books from the hedgeschool, handed down over the generations are temporarily placed on the grave, along with a wreath of wildflowers. Prayers, poetry and music also mark the occasion. In 1998, on the 200th anniversary of the United Irishmen, wreaths were laid on behalf of the President of Ireland, Patron of the Tom Dunn Society; on behalf of the Government of Ireland, by An tÁire, Éamon Ó Cuív TD, and on behalf of Newry and Mourne Council, by the Chair of the Council during the graveside ceremony.
