Silverdale Country Park
Description
This picturesque 83-hectare park was created on the former Silverdale Colliery and provides an enticing venue for the public to enjoy and where nature can Silverdale Country Park was created on the site of the former Silverdale Colliery which closed in 1998 after leading Europe in Coal production at one time. Silverdale Country Park opened in 2011 after several years of remediation work to convert the site from the former pit to the Wildlife Haven the site has now become.
Silverdale Country Park is designed to be a place for wildlife conservation and for the local community to enjoy quiet recreation and this can be done via a network of 8 miles of footpaths around the 200 acre park, most of which provide access for all.
Working with schools and volunteers is a big part of Silverdale Country Park and several awards have been received for this community engagement.
Silverdale Country Park has a variety of Wildlife habitats including Lakes, Meadows and Woodland. However, it is the bare ground habitats (which result from the colliery past), which attract the rare wildlife that led in 2015 to he site being designated as a Site of Biological Importance for its rare Birds, butterflies and invertebrates to name a few.

facebook.comA momentous day for Silverdale. The pit wheel has been erected. A few fixings, another coat of paint and some tidying left to do over the next few days but almost complete. Many thanks to the parish council and all those involved.
Nice to see a few visitors braving the beast from the east as they visit Silverdale country park but please take care and wrap up warm. Here are some photos to enjoy over a cuppa indoors
Bit chilly this morning but our volunteers were out today building a sleeper bridge and fencing. many thanks to them.

Wonderful news. Work has started today to install the Miners Pit Wheel on the corner of Silverdale Country Park near our Green Flag and the Silverdale Athletic Football Club car park. The miners wheel has been kept safe for many years under the watchful eye of local mining families and we are all eager to see it reinstated for all to enjoy and remember. Work starts today for the next couple of weeks which will affect some path access in the area but hopefully our visitors will forgive some minimal disruption. Many thanks to the Parish Council and allthose involved for making this happen Here are some old photos of the wheel
A cool start for our volunteers today but everyone soon warmed up managing our woodlands. It was great to see the fruits of our efforts over the last 7 years. Wildlife habitat such as dead wood is doing really well providing us lots of different fungi to admire
Nice to see the dangers of feeding birds bread being described so well
Great fun today with our volunteers planting 70 trees as a wildlife shelter belt and doing some tree thinning and dead hedging. Also found this interesting fungus. Is it only me that thinks it resembles a piece of battered fish from the chip shop from the back....

Happy New year everyone. If anyone has any information on the fly tippers who over New Year discarded rubbish at our High Lane, Scot Hay Pull In and Cannel Row entrances please can you get in touch? We managed to find an address on some mail amongst the rotting nappies from the rubbish left at Scot Hay today, which the Police are now investigating but a date the rubbish was left would help. For reference, address details previouslyfound in fly tipping at High lane in December are also being investigated and in previous years we have been able to identify 2 other fly tippers who were prosecuted and fined so it is worth sharing any details on fly tipping you may have so that we can combat the disgusting people who leave fly tipping.
Dead hedging and then a Turkey dinner now that's the way to spend time with our wonderful volunteers
DANGER ! Please keep your dogs and yourselves off the Ice!!! Fudge the dog nearly drowned today when he fell through the ice after running to the middle of a frozen lake at Silverdale Country Park. By luck I was retrieving a life ring that sadly had been thrown into the frozen lake, so luckily saw Fudge fall in. 5 mins later and I wouldn't of been there to see it. Fudge couldn't pull himself out of the freezing water onto the ice but was able to tread water long enough for me wade out into the lake breaking the Ice with a spade to get fudge out. Fudge is okay as is everyone else this time but I cannot say strongly enough. Respect Water and Respect the Dangers of Frozen Lakes. I don't think I'll ever forget the anguish I saw on the little girls face and her mum's face whilst they helplessly watched their dog Fudge about to drown succumbing to hypothermia. Please be careful everyone! Merry Christmas Andy the Ranger.
