WEEKLY REMINDER: Characteristics of a Believer (2) Safeguarding Ones Tongue Watching what we say is a constant struggle, but a worthy one. The honourable companion of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Umar Ibn Al-Khattab (RA) once said, ‘I have never regretted my silence. As for my speech, I’ve regretted it many times’. This is something we can probably all relate to; we often utter harsh words in anger, or speak unkindly about others either to their faces or behind their backs, and feel the guilt of our deeds when we reflect on them later. The words of the Prophet (PBUH) and Umar (RA) remind us to think before we speak, and to appreciate that silence may be preferable to the words we wish to say. There is also great reward in restraining our tongues, and it can be an act at the core of our faith as Muslims. Mu’adh Ibn Jabal asked the prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to tell him of an act that will take him to Paradise, and keep him away from the Hellfire. After explaining the merits of worshipping Allah alone, performing prayer, zakat, fasting, and hajj, the prophet (PBUH) seized hold of his tongue and told Mu’adh that the tongue was the controller of all of these deeds. “Restrain this!”, he said, “May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu’adh! Is there anything that causes people to be dragged on their faces into Hellfire other than the harvests of their tongues?”. [Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Ahmad – Sahih)
