Alexandra Park Children's Learning Community
Description
Alexandra Park is a vibrant children´s learning community. Bilingual in English and Spanish. It has a Reggio Emilia inspired nursery and kindergarten. A 7-11 progressive and democratic learning community. A Holiday Club. An Out of School Club. At Alexandra Park Children´s Learning Community, we value people as individuals. We believe that children are natural learners and, therefore, we seek to support children as they develop. Children are free to be themselves, and to explore their own paths through education. We want to ignite children´s curiosity. We want children to ask questions, to explore, to research. We want children to develop a life long love of learning. We want children to wake up on Saturday and be sorry it is not Monday.
We want to develop a democratic community of learners where everybody´s opinion is valued and treated with equal respect.
We believe that learning is a personal journey that goes beyond the school walls and as a result we want our learning centre to be an active player in the development of the community. We want to create a space that helps our children to play a role in the community whilst at the same time we offer the community a place to develop by sharing our resources and expertise.
We want to create an environment that fosters kindness, empathy and a passion for learning that helps to create confident, independent and critical thinkers and overallrounded individuals.

Just been up to check everything is ok in the nursery, it´s near closing time. All the children were engaged in something. The older children building and a few others drawing. Z was singing with the smaller ones while other children were using straws in a picture. Some babies were being picked up by their parents. There´s a quiet hum of content. How lucky we are to be part of this.

Some news from the garden and sciences department: The garden is now a base to experiment, understand and learn about nature. We are doing some interesting things at the moment: - Moon cycle planting: We planted some seeds according to the right moon for them, and some seeds a bit before the natural cycles, and are watching now to see how much their growth is affected by the moons cycle. - Comparing potatoes growing: Based on 14 differents types of potatoes with 3 different crops. - The ISS rocket science project : Linked with 100 others experimentators,we are very lucky to have some rocket seeds that have have been on board the ISS (International Space Station) are now back on Earth. We are contributing to sowing and growing and testing what was the impact of this travel in space. We are happy to announce that we are now connected with the Royal Horticulture Society and some members of our adult community are doing some training with them. See you soon around the garden. PS: The chickens are very comfortable around the children.
The hens are doing really well, they roam around all day and when they want to be alone they go into their own space. They are very socialable. They are such a pleasure to have around. The garden is looking fabulous, really beautiful, Jo, Didier and the children are doing a great job. The pond is nearly finished and the outdoor bread / pizza oven is on it´s way. Life is good.
