May is National Veterinary Nursing Awareness month! Veterinary Nurses (or technicians) are an integral part of any Veterinary Practice. Veterinary Nursing is more than a profession - it is a passion. Our nurses are not mini-vets but Veterinary Nurses who are proud to do just that - nurse. Our nurses want to be the warm hand that holds your pets paw, who gently strokes their fur, nuzzles into their head, reassures them and gently tells them that they are safe and everything will be okay. Our nurses love to be the last touch your pet feels and last voice they hear before they go under an anaesthetic - and the first voice they hear as they wake up to a comforting cuddle. Nurses have to multi-task and require in-depth knowledge across the spectrum of medical and surgical medicine. Our nurses have up-to-date clinical knowledge and expertise and support the Veterinary Surgeons throughout their daily routine. Here's a big shout-out to all the Veterinary Nurses, Technicians and Care Assistants who work tirelessly and passionately for those who don't have a voice!
Opening times Bank Holidays (1st May & 29th May) We are open 9am-6pm Please remember to leave an extra day for ordering repeat prescriptions as we will not receive a wholesaler delivery on the Bank Holiday. *** DESENSITISATION SESSIONS *** Desensitisation sessions are great for those dogs who are anxious coming into the vets and/or being handled. These sessions are run weekly by our nurse Lucy and are free-of-charge. The only cost is a commitment on your part to visit Lucy on a regular basis to ensure progress. This lovely lady is Lily, who was very anxious when she first visited us, and cautious of any sort of handling. Fast forward 2 years (and regular sessions) and she now drags her owners into the clinic, announces her own arrival and will happily pose for photos on our desk! If you think your dog will benefit from desensitisation sessions, please call us on 01522 542781 and book in.

***PLEASE SPONSOR EMMA*** Emma, one of our vets, is going to Malawi as a Mission Rabies volunteer in April to vaccinate thousands of dogs against rabies. It is estimated that around 100 children worldwide still die every day from rabies. 70,000 people every year are killed by the disease and perhaps the worst part about this is the preventable nature of rabies. In many countries, the cost of post-exposure prophylaxis is so prohibitive that even those who could logistically gain access to treatment are forced to suffer without it. With around 99% of human cases related to dog bites, vaccinating dogs on a large scale can make a massive difference and save so many human (and canine) lives. Emma is fundraising for the charity through her Justgiving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Emma-Howson8 You can also sponsor Emma at the practice. Volunteers cover all their own costs for accommodation, flights, visas, etc so all money raised will go directly to Mission Rabies to help continue their work. If you would like to donate to help fund this work, Emma and Mission Rabies would be incredibly grateful. Thank you very much.
How do I Find a Suitable Dog Training Course?
How can I ensure my trainer/behaviourist is suitably qualified? There is currently no national regulation for dog trainers and animal behaviourists – in fact anyone can advertise themselves as a ‘trainer’ or a ‘behaviourist’ without having the relevant qualifications, or keeping up-to-date with behavioural or training advances. Owning animals and personal experience is NOT a substitute for regulated training. Inappropriate training can actually do a lot of harm. There are some independent regulatory bodies that represent animal trainers and behaviourists, such as the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC), The Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) and The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT). These regulatory bodies have standards of knowledge and practical skills that all members must demonstrate and keep up-to-date to ensure they are appropriately qualified. We only recommend local trainers and behaviourists that either belong to one of these regulatory bodies; or those that have a suitable qualification (such as a recent degree or MSc in Clinical Animal Behaviour from a reputable and regulated body). We also only recommend trainers who use positive, reward-based methods, and who have moved away from the ‘dominance’ and ‘pack leader’ theories which are now out-dated (and dangerous). If you require any further information or advice, please do not hesitate to call the clinic. http://www.dogwelfarecampaign.org/find-a-trainer.php
Doggy Day Care –Fun for Fido or Not?
Doggy day-care: what is the best option for your dog? Doggy day-care (in the style of a crèche) is quickly becoming a popular choice for dog owners, who believe that they are doing their best for their dog by providing day care and mental stimulation while they are out of the home. It is not without risk, however, and can have significant detrimental effects on your dog’s wellbeing if not managed safely and correctly. The article below highlights the risks associated with crèche-style day-care, and serious thought and consideration of not only your dog’s personality, but also the facilities and staff on offer should be undertaken. http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/theotherendoftheleash/doggy-day-care-fun-for-fido-or-not
