We’ve had a very wet, but also very productive days training, practicing Swift Water Training for dealing with flooded environments with Tewksbury station, a simulated DEFRA callout! Previously we’ve been called into Essex, Cornwall, Exeter, Yorkshire.

SARA - Water Rescue

Did you know you have a Rescue service? SARA covers areas like Halesowen, Dudley, Stourbridge, Kinver, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Stourport-on-Severn, Bewdley, Bridgnorth, Bromsgrove, Worcester and further afield. We are based at Kidderminster Fire Station and NOT one member of SARA Wyre Forest is paid, not even expenses to get to the Fire Station. SARA are a specialist Water and Land search rescue team based in the Midlands, they are an emergency service, deployed by the Police, Fire or Ambulance Service in response to 999 calls. This could be by the Police to carry out searches for missing people, by the Fire Service to go to the aid of people or craft in danger from water in places such as rivers or quarries including areas affected by flooding, or to assist the Ambulance Service in reaching a casualty in difficult terrain. Today has brought a harsh reminder of the risks faced by those who are involved in search and rescue. An Irish SAR helicopter has believed to have crashed off the coast of Ireland, the search continues for its crew (see BBC news for updates). Our thoughts are with all involved.

Great to see SARA on the telly tonight, Channel 4s Rivers with Jeremy Paxman, following the River Severn from the sea to its source. It was interesting to see the immense scale to the Severn as it makes its way through our communities. Maybe we forget sometimes what a beautiful and majestic the River Severn truly is.
