The shop grew from a pop-up shop called Bond Street Studios and is the brainchild of Hingham based designer Lizzy Whitman ; a showcase for original pieces of work from local quality makers and designers. We operate as a collective of designers who live and work in Norfolk sharing creativity, inspiration, friendship and a passion for all things handmade.
In February 2011 the studios opened as an occasional pop-up shop in Lizzy’s delightful garden room. However, in response to customer demand, Bond Street Studios has expanded into new premises, open from Thursday to Sunday each week. The new shop is located in what was previously the ’Dairy’ in Bond Street; the tastefully renovated Georgian building comprises a light and airy shop area and sunny courtyard filled with beautiful plants and elegant topiary.
Work on show and for sale includes classic shift dresses made from vintage or up-cycled fabrics, hallmarked silver jewellery, lampwork glass beads, handmade handbags, felted and knitted accessories, ties and men’s accessories, textile gifts, paintings and prints, 'posh plants' and garden design, African baskets, buttons, ceramics and decorative glass pieces, a selection of greetings cards, handmade soaps , and much, much more! As all our products are handmade we are pleased to offer our customers a bespoke service if required. Core members of the collective have permanent yet constantly changing displays of work, whilst visiting or featured designers provide even more diversity. You never know what you will find at Bond Street Studios!
BOND STREET STUDIOS- CORE MEMBER BIOGRAPHIES
Lizzy Whitman- (Ladieswear )
Lizzy is the inspiration behind Bond Street Studios! She trained at the London College of Fashion and has worked with Zandra Rhodes and other couture designers. Lizzy’s stunning shift dresses and skirts are beautifully hand crafted using vintage or up-cycled fabrics. Dresses can be made to order in a variety of fabrics or obtained from stock.
Zena Rowland ( African basket ware)
Zena has several products under her wing. African baskets handmade from grass and recycled plastic make ideal laundry or general baskets for the home. A percentage of the profit goes back to the village in Senegal where they are produced, where they are hoping to build a library. Her past experience includes the role of buyer for a well known London department store and purchasing gifts and lifestyle accessories for a small but highly respected local shop. She is always talent scouting for well designed, unusual pieces which support the small business.
Felicity Withers (Bead maker)
Previously a fabric designer and colourist, Felicity's textile background has influenced her current work. She creates stunning glass beads from molten glass soda in every colour of the rainbow. This is solitary and meditative work using lampwork techniques as practised by the Romans... the result, an explosion of variety, colour and design in just 2gms of glass.
MOIRA VENN ( Merton Silver – Jewellery ) Moira began silversmithing about eight years ago and gradually developed her skills and individual style to produce a range of hallmarked sterling silver jewellery that she does not consider pretty, but rather more striking and interesting. Different techniques are used in one piece (e.g. hammering, piercing and folding etc) and sometimes combined with semi-precious stones, other metals and beads. Moira’s work can be seen at Bond Street Studios in Hingham and in the shop at the Sainsbury Centre for the Visual Arts, U.E.A., Norwich.
