Redgrave and Lopham Fen - Suffolk Wildlife Trust
Description
Redgrave & Lopham Fen National Nature Reserve is the largest remaining river valley fen in England and the source of the River Waveney. As one of the most important wetlands in Europe, Redgrave and Lopham Fen now has international protection. As well as open fen, the reserve includes a mixture of wet heathland, open water, scrub and woodland. The underlying acid and alkaline geology has resulted in characteristic wildlife including many species now rare in Britain.

Have you seen the strange apple-like growths on oak trees recently? There are lots about at the moment. They are called oak apple galls and are caused by the gall wasp Biorhiza pallida. There are lots of other plant galls (abnormal growths caused by other organisms) to be spotted too. Have you seen any?

Such a lovely time of year here at Redgrave & Lopham Fen - sedge warblers are everywhere, cuckoos have arrived, blackcaps singing, bittern is booming, small red damselfly on the wing and water violet coming into flower. Here is a great picture of a cuckoo from last year feeding on a caterpillar (thanks to John Yaxley for the photo)
