Cheltenham Saracens RFC 2nd XV 14-13 Bredon Star RFC Ltd 1st XV After a long hard season with many ups and downs the 2nd XV's season culminated with a cup final against Bredon Star RFC Ltd who ply their trade in Glos league 1...just one league below our 1st XV. With the stellar performance against Old Patesians RFC still fresh in players minds, selection was never going to be easy. Marred by unavailability and injury to key players, manager Paul Grayson had the unenviable task of selecting 19 players to represent the club on finals day. From the outset, Sarries were under pressure from their own mistakes...Uncharacteristic handling errors gave Bredon Star RFC Ltd field position time and again, allowing their impressive 10 to slot 2 penalties, with Sarries missing 2 themselves. Nervous energy was the cause, with forwards and backs trying too hard to provide the killer pass, this allied with Bredon Star RFC Ltd's stout defence ensured Sarries struggled to gain the upper hand and opportunities were slipping through the sarries fingers. Impressive dominance in the set piece especially in the scrums were probably the saving grace in the first half, however this wasn't enough to stop Bredon Star RFC Ltd from scoring a try to make the halftime score 13-0. The break was timely as Sarries composed themselves and worked out what needed to be done. The nervousness had passed and Sarries started to tick. Passes were held and ground made going forward. A searing break from the backs through the centre left Wayne Smallman with one man to beat and score near the posts...extras added 13-7. A stalemate ensued as Sarries laid siege to Bredon Star RFC Ltd's line. The scrum dominance did not pay dividends as Bredon Star RFC Ltd were allowed to ease pressure through mistakes and ill discipline. Eventually the pressure did tell and the impressive Edward Hampshire glided his way over and Buster Mazowiec added the points making it 14-13 to the Sarries with 20-15 mins to go. Bredon Star RFC Ltd were never a side to fold and Sarries had to work hard to keep their slender lead. On more than one occasion they came close but resolute defence held the score line. The game ended with significant drama. A penalty was awarded in a position that Bredon Star RFC Ltd were not in range of the posts, however the ref marched Sarries 10 metres back for ill discipline, meaning the kick was reachable. It seemed like curtains for the Sarries as the Bredon kicker had been on target all game. Hearts were in mouths as the kick went up and sailed just past the right hand post meaning the Sarries won as this was the final act of the game!!!!....... 14-13 to Sarries final score ....Champions! 🏆 A great result against a very good side with the forwards dominant and the backs evenly matched. Notable performances from everyone involved but writers MoM is Buster Mazowiec who pulled the strings, kept everyone level headed and kept the team motivated. Many thanks for the huge support throughout the cup games...it was much appreciated and is a great boost for the players hearing the sounds and shouts of encouragement from the sidelines. Finally massive praise should deservedly be heaped upon the manager Paul Grayson for his tireless work throughout the season ensuring the 2's had a side every week, doing the little unseen things to keep the players happy....this cup win is fine reward for your efforts, Kiwi, thanks! #UTS 💙💛
