facebook.comI just did a very me thing. On arriving at my studio for some evening guitar practise, I fished in my bag for the pack of faux bacon I'd bought on the way and put it in the fridge. My attention naturally called away to higher matters, it took me a few moments to realise I had just set T.S Eliot's Four Quartets to chill.

I've come to realise one of the biggest flaws with many vocal technique instructors: they tend to only demonstrate technique as it sounds after they've mastered it - but there's something to be said for being able to demonstrate the steps to getting to that point, not all of which may be as flattering to the vocal coach's ego. Rock-leaning tutors have a particular tendency to belt at full volume when they should be demonstrating light mass vocalisations at a low intensity for learners. Failure to set the appropriate example can lead to students over singing in an attempt to emulate their teacher's sound before they're physically ready to.
