SPARTANS III 17-14 ERDINGTON A disappointing result to finish the league campaign but a heartening performance against an experienced and well drilled side. Great to see 3 debutants, as the club’s beginners sessions start to bear fruit Full report to follow.

Humble apologies for not getting round to doing a February News Letter. It is hard to believe that 62 players have now played for Erdington this season. Admittedly this includes many one off guest appearances to honour fixtures and brief cameo performances from past players who tried to defy sagging waistlines and various injuries ranging from gout to incontinence and many more besides. However, we do have a dedicated squad of players who will represent our Club for many years to come and with the recent influx of new recruits following an advert on Face Book we are not far from being able to put out a 2nd XV. It was great to watch Trevor Brice play in the same team for the first time with his son Daniel. They both thoroughly enjoyed the encounters with a defeat against Dixonians and a victory in a rather feisty affair against Birmingham Barbarians. Sadly in this fixture Seamus Mulhall broke his ankle playing for the opposition and we wish him a speedy recovery. The £1000 pound donation from Trevor was warmly received by the Club and we look forward to seeing him again on his next return from Canada. The lads put up a great performance against an experienced Edwardians XV and the 12–3 victory was arguably the best all round squad performance of the season so far. Attendance at the Wednesday training sessions at Erdington Academy has been very encouraging with Male numbers 20+ and Females numbers about 10. Financial implications are soaring with this increase in participating members and inevitably we are looking for people to sponsor the cost of new shirts, shorts & socks for various teams and all the new training equipment that is required. A blast from the past, Andy Clough attended the recent fixture against Birmingham Barbarians and he sends his best wishes to all people who remember him. Many thanks to John and Sean Tighe and the rest of the Bar Staff who created a wonderful atmosphere in a heaving Spotted Dog for the recent England and Ireland game, which several old and new members went along to watch. Pity about the result but a great day was enjoyed by everyone there. The Annual Club Dinner will be held on Saturday 19th May 2018 and Mark Linnett will be the guest speaker. Cost will be £25 and we are limited to 100 places so look out for further details on the Club Web Site to avoid disappointment. Larry Cahn Chairman ERFC.
