The waterproof layer on the M5 Oldbury Viaduct has reached the end of its lifespan which means the concrete is no longer protected. Because of this some of the concrete has been damaged. We are repairing the concrete and replacing the waterproofing on the Oldbury Viaduct to keep the viaduct stable and safe for years to come. To complete this work safely and efficiently we have a contraflow system in place between M5 junctions 1-2 with a 30mph speed limit.

This section of the M5 motorway is particularly busy as it provides a commuter route around the Birmingham hub. It is not possible to carry out a scheme of this scale without causing severe congestion in the area. To reduce this congestion we have made changes to the road layout at M5 junction 4a northbound and M6 junction 8 southbound to encourage drivers to take the alternative route along the M42 or M6 and limit the amount of traffic heading through the roadworks at Oldbury Viaduct.

This page provides information on project progress and upcoming road closures.

These photographs show the different scales of concrete deterioration we are repairing and how this can change between areas. The top left photograph is an example of the areas with many small repairs we are having to carry out. Some of these smaller holes found in a linear pattern are a result of voids left in the slab during its construction, these were filled in at the time but have since deteriorated badly. Alternatively, the photograph on the right shows a large repair area. On the southbound carriageway there were approximately 5800 of these patch repairs in total to do and these are a mix of either ‘partial depth’ or ‘full depth’. We are aiming to have all of these completed over the next few weeks with the waterproofing operation following on.

A team of carpenters working for our contractors BMV on scaffolding; 11m above ground level, underneath the M5 and over the Birmingham Canal. They are installing formwork for the next set of concrete repairs. We just liked the photo.

We have started preparing the concrete surface to apply the new waterproofing layer in areas where all repairs are completed. The surface has to be ‘roughened’ to receive the new material and then we rely on weather and temperature conditions before it can be applied.
