Spain 2016 got off to a slow start with the hold ups in Dover but thanks to a nifty 12 mile queue jump we were only delayed by four hours. The holiday has got off to a very good start with snorkelling and sailing today. Not much wind for the sailing but they enjoyed swimming from the boat. Snorkelling we saw plenty of fish including a huge shoal of sardines and grey mullet, silver bream and giant clams.the temperatures are soaring into the thirties but a nice breeze out on the sea. Tomorrow will be a morning on the beach followed by the trip to Barcelona for the Noucamp stadium and La Rambla.

Routes into Languages Pop Video Competition - THE RESULT! You may remember that a few weeks ago, we were asking you to vote for some of our students who had entered a MFL Pop Video Competition. On Wednesday 29 March, three of our finest linguists took part in the award ceremony celebrating their achievements in making a pop video in a foreign Language. They qualified for two awards: the national Online Viewers Award which saw András come 10th and Zsófia and Nell grabbed 9th out of 41 entries! At one point, both videos made it to the top 5! More than 19,000 viewers from 81 different countries cast their votes but that was just the start as a jury of highly commended polyglots from around the country also voted for the best of the best and after much deliberation both videos made it in the top 4! As a result András came first runner up and Zsófia and Nell came 4th runner ups. They all received a monetary prize but what they gained in appreciation of foreign languages and cultures is undoubtedly priceless. A very big WELL DONE to all three of them! A photo of the proud students attached!

Big Bang South West: Bideford College were excited to be a part of the Big Bang South West event hosted by Exeter University last week. The Big Bang initiative is the largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths for young people in the UK. The event is host to a number of high profile STEM competitions which showcase the region’s best student projects from every area of science, technology, engineering and maths. Students from Bideford College took part in the young engineer competition by entering their Greenpower car and narrowly missed a prize by just one point! Once the judging was complete the students could take part in the inter active exhibitions from local and national organisations such as the Met Office, Eden Project, Western Power Distribution, South West Water, Paignton Zoo Environmental Park, Crayon Architecture and Design, Exeter College, South West Water, Antech, TDK Lambda and Babcock International. Students then attended the exciting Science Show in the Great Hall where they had a chance to replicate and compare the experiments carried out on the international space station in weightlessness conditions. The best part of the day was when the students had a chance to see what careers are open to those who study Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. They had the chance to experience everything between Crime Scene Investigation to virtual reality goggles.

Ali Goody (Bideford College TA) and Josh Roberts (Bideford College student) have both shaved their heads this week for cancer related charities. Ali explains - "I was inspired by Lisa WallisCrocker who set up the charity ChemoHero. She has had breast cancer twice in 3 years. She found that the first time she underwent chemotherapy no one really told her what she needed so for her first treatment she took no water and no food. She said that you really need drink and food because of the time each treatment takes. An idea formed that led to her launching the ChemoHero charity. On their first day of chemotherapy treatment at NDDH, patients are given a box or bag. In each box/bag of kindness are items that you might need during chemotherapy treatment. What Lisa is hoping for is that eventually each box will also contain a special treat so that memories can be made as well. She is an amazing lady". The idea for Josh started as a bit of a joke as people started to nag him that his hair was getting long and he needed it cut. Eventually Josh decided he would do it for charity. 5 years of hair growing later, Josh has finally tamed his long locks; free of charge courtesy of Steven & Laurent Hairdressers (thanks Steven!). Josh picked Cancer Research as his chosen charity. Please see attached an album which showcases both transformations! A huge congratulations to both Ali and Josh for raising both money and awareness for Chemo Hero and Cancer Research UK.
