More than just a label When thinking of refugees, one might primarily think of people that have left their homes, family and friends behind in search of a better future. The “refugee” label becomes their main identity, what defines them, especially when portrayed in media. This label however robs them of their individuality, the diversity of stories, backgrounds, dreams and talents they all have. The people I have met in the different camps all came from a variety of different backgrounds and each has their own story to tell. If one only perceives them as a homogenous mass, one forgets that these people were leading a regular life before, a life in which they had been university students, teachers, tattoo-artists, athletes, aspiring flight-attendants, engineers, nurses, managers, accountants, future doctors and lawyers, bike-fanatics, kite-runners and many other things. It is crucial that their voices be heard, that they are perceived as more than just a label that was imposed on them and only grasps a small part of their identity. In the monthly newspaper published by Borderfree Association and supported by the Serbian government, refugees get to tell their stories, share recipes, show their talents and share knowledge and advice. With great dedication and creativity, the people involved are putting together articles and photographs to make a perfect edition each month. Hours of writing, reviewing, editing and designing the final version in many workshops pay off, the printed-out copies are always very popular and are usually all gone within little time. It is projects like this that give the people in camp some self-determination and dignity back and break through the daily routine and hopefully make life in camp a bit more pleasant. Kein Tag wie ein anderer Seit nun mehr als fünf Wochen bin ich hier in Presevo als Volontärin tätig. Es hat sich eine gewisse Routine eingestellt, trotzdem ist jeder Tag wieder anders. Momentan sind wir nur wenige Volontäre, dies bedeutet unter anderem, mehr Unterricht vorbereiten, mehr Unterricht durchführen und für mehr Personen im Camp eine gewisse Ansprechperson zu sein. Die Tage sind streng, vom Morgen bis frühen Nachmittag geben wir Deutsch und Englisch Unterricht, am Nachmittag Workshops oder arbeiten an der Zeitung. Wir spielen Fussball und machen beim Fitness mit. Vor allem das Unterrichten stellt für mich als „Laien-Lehrerin“ immer wieder eine Herausforderung dar. Mal überfordern mich die Schüler mit ihren wissensbegierigen Fragen, mal überfordere ich sie mit zu viel Vokabular oder zu schwerer Grammatik. Trotzdem bedanken sie sich nach jeder Stunde bei mir und wenn ich sie sonst im Camp antreffe, stellen sie mich mit Stolz und Freude als „my teacher“ ihrer Familie oder Freunden vor. Diese Situationen vertreiben meine Sorgen, denn sie zeigen mir, dass ich meinen Schülern etwas beibringen kann und sie gerne zu mir in den Unterricht kommen. An einem Morgen kamen wir wegen einem Problem mit dem Auto ca. 15 Min. zu spät zum Unterricht. Wir dachten, dass wohl niemand mehr in die erste Schulstunde kommen wird. Wir haben uns jedoch schwer getäuscht. Mit Applaus wurden wir von 15-20 Schülern vor der Schule erwartet! Unterrichten hier bedeutet auch, flexibel zu sein. An einem Tag sassen anstelle von fünf Schülern plötzlich doppelt so viele bei mir am Tisch. Oder man lehrt plötzlich etwas Anderes, als man eigentlich geplant hat, da die Schüler so viele Fragen haben. Umso schöner ist es deshalb, wenn der Unterricht trotzdem zu einem Erfolg wird, die Schüler etwas lernen und wir zusammen lachen können. Eine schöne und vertraute Situation entstand zum Beispiel vor ein paar Tagen im Englischunterricht. Wir machten eigentlich Übungen zum Past simple, doch kamen irgendwie auf das Thema Geschwister und so erzählten wir uns alle gegenseitig von unseren Geschwistern. Nach der Arbeit im Camp um 18Uhr ist unsere Arbeit noch nicht beendet. Es steht an, die Stunden für den nächsten Tag vorzubereiten. Bei solch wissensbegierigen Schülern sind meine Ansprüche an mich hoch, die Stunden gut vorzubereiten. Die Arbeit hier kann streng sein, doch die Dankbarkeit und Liebe, die die Menschen uns zurückgeben, macht alles wieder gut. Coming Back When I came back to camp after almost six months, I had mixed feelings about my return. I had stayed in touch with some of the friends I had made during my stay last summer and I couldn’t decide whether I was happy or sad about seeing them again. Happy because I was looking forward to hold classes and workshops together with them, drink chai, play soccer, a game of UNO, tell stories or simply just share a moment of silence together. Sad because for them, not much had changed. They had been reliving the same old routine every single day, waiting in anticipation for the moment where they would finally be able to move on. I remembered the goodbyes in the summer, how we wished for us to see each other again, but next time in a different place, hopefully a country they could call home. As I re-entered camp on a mild Wednesday afternoon, the air was crisp and the atmosphere in camp was quiet. Only the sound of people playing soccer in the distant and some children running around, seemingly carefree as if the situation in camp wouldn’t affect them at all, could be heard. As I was walking towards Umbrella, I saw a familiar face in the distance. One of my former students had started to help out serving tea in the popular internet cafe and has been assisting Borderfree Association in various other tasks, wherever he possibly could. Being greeted by his big smile, my negative thoughts immediately disappeared. A bit later, more people that I had met during summer came to say hello and I was greeted incredibly warmly. I was truly impressed with the progress they had made and it was a great joy to see that most of them had not only greatly improved their language skills due to their diligence and strong will to learn, but have also started taking on responsibilities, such as teaching English in the Borderfree school or leading the women’s sports-team in order to motivate others to participate in soccer practice. Collaborating with organisations such as Borderfree Association allows for them to use their skills and take a bit more control over their life. Although they might not be able to shape their future at the moment, they’re trying to make the best out of their current situation and improve the life in camp for themselves and others.

Emotional experience In this volunteer report I would like to share my personal emotions I had during one week as a volunteer in the camps of Presevo, Vranje and Bujanovac. When I decided to go to Serbia for Borderfree Association I wasn’t sure about what to expect. Neither from how a refugee camp works, nor what my work would be like in specific. Because of that I felt very nervous. I wasn’t sure if I was able to live up to their and my expectations, so I felt very uncertain. But this nervousness was generally very positive, because it came together with the anticipation I felt to learn more about migration, humanity, cultures, teaching languages and myself. After my first day in camp my nervousness has gone. Everyone was very nice and open to me. I always felt very welcome (more than back at home) and people appreciated my work very much. This was very moving for me and I felt very happy because of this. Amongst other things these are reasons why I sometimes forgot where I was and what sad stories people around me carry with them. So mostly I experienced very positive feelings. But my emotions could turn very fast. There were situations that brought me back to reality. For example when people told me their stories from leaving home and their experiences with harm, violence and corruption. In these moments I felt bad for the people, angry with the world and also slightly guilty because my life compared to them seems so easy. Generally I can say that my emotions were strong and could turn very fast and easily. Back at home they still do. This experience has brought me to think about the whole situation of migration from different angles and I have also learned a lot about yourself. "Last Saturday was a beautiful sunny afternoon. I spread the coloured crayons to children which we found while cleaning our school the morning before. All of them had a big smile on their faces and started to draw flowers and rainbows all over the floor. These little beings are impressing me every day. Meanwhile they are facing a difficult situation, where nobody really knows what's gonna happen next. Regardless they don't lose their smiles and stay strong." Die heutige Jugend... Borderfree lebt rein von privaten Spenden. Da denkt man immer an reiche Leute, die viel Geld haben. Spenden ist nichts für Jugendliche, man hat ja nicht mal Geld um sich die schönen Schuhe oder das schöne Armband zu leisten. Aber dies heisst nicht, dass man nicht trotzdem helfen kann. Die Jugendlichen aus der Arbeitsintegration im "Trampolin" in Winterthur haben sich dasselbe gedacht und letzten Samstag einen Verkaufsstand in der Stadt aufgestellt.Zu kaufen gabs Muffins, Brownies, Guetzli, sogar für die "Salzigen" gabs Käse-, Speck- oder normale Brötchen, alles selbst gebacken, verstehr sich! Sie haben sogar eigens gebastelte Valentinstagskärtchen und dazu selbst gegossene Kerzen in Herzenform bereit gehalten! Maeva (erste von Links) meint: "Ich habe mich sehr gut gefühlt da ich wusste dass es für einen guten Zweck ist und wir vielen Menschen in Not helfen können. Es hat mir sehr viel Spass gemacht da mir Jelena sehr viel erzählen konnte sodass ich eine bessere Vorstellung von den Camp hatte und so auch die Infos an die spender weiter geben konnte" Ich war beeindruckt, denn das Wetter war mehr als nur unangenehm, es windete und schneite sogar! Sie waren in Gruppen eingeteilt und hatten verschiedene Schichten. Maeva blieb aber den ganzen Tag und gab ihren ganzen freien Samstag für die Aktion hin. Die heute Jugend ist einfach toll und jeder könnte sich eine Scheibe von ihnen abschneiden! An diesem Samstag kamen ca. 500 Franken zusammen. Vielen Dank an das ganze Trampolin Team, welches die Zutaten für das selbst gebackene Essen gespendet hat und an alle Jugendlichen die dazu beigetragen haben. Ihr seid die Zukunft, macht weiter so und ich muss mir keine Sorgen machen!
