Institut für Juristische Grundlagen - lucernaiuris
Description
The Institute for Research in the Fundaments of Law – lucernaiuris is an interdisciplinary research centre based at the University of Lucerne. The Institute for Research in the Fundaments of Law – lucernaiuris is dedicated to advancing pioneering academic work in the foundational legal subjects (legal history, legal philosophy, legal theory and legal sociology). In particular, it seeks to promote the development of inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to the study of law, which enrich legal discourse by opening new and innovative avenues of inquiry.
During the inauguration conference of the institute in October 2004, the legal historian Marie Theres Fögen characterised the foundational subjects as the ‚unloved children‘ of legal studies and jurisprudence, whose task it is to play the role of ‚troublemaker‘ and not ‚troubleshooter‘. By subjecting the law and legal traditions to constant scrutiny and problematisation, lucernaiuris provides for and furthers permanent critical reflection within the field of legal science.
Fundamental to the undertakings of the institute is the belief that one of the keys to unlocking the innovative potential of legal studies lies in the cross-linking of principles of law with outside impulses and currents – new and productive research pathways often present themselves in contexts in which familiar methods and patterns of understanding come into contact with, or are challenged by, external perspectives. To this end, lucernaiuris actively pursues a methodological and content-related dialogue with other humanities and social science subjects – the goal of the institute is to create an interdisciplinary network between various professors, chairs and institutes, whereby the unifying elements are the advancement of transdisciplinary thinking and initiatives and the close focus on the fundamental principles of law. The objective is not to canonise particular legal norms or readings in the subject. Rather, the institute sees itself as an open laboratory for the critical discussion of ideas and concepts, through which it aims to make a significant contribution to solving current and ever-changing legal problems in both its research and teaching.
Now in its second decade of existence, the Institute for Research in the Fundaments of Law – lucernaiuris remains an innovative hub for trans- and interdisciplinary intellectual exchange, for the promotion of young researchers and the advancement of new teaching and research practices. In addition, the institute provides an infrastructure which facilitates and promotes cooperation both within the university and with external bodies and institutions, and allows for the organisation of an active research programme and a wide range of events, including large-scale conferences, workshops and seminars.
