More information and the programme from day to day can be found on the Lorentz Center website.
Public Lecture Andrei Linde
On Friday 23 June 2017, Stanford professor Andrei Linde will give a free public lecture at the Stadsschouwburg in Leiden. Linde is one of the world's leading cosmologists. Besides his scientific achievements, he is world famous for his eloquent, amusing and pleasant public lectures. Entrance is free, but reservations are compulsory, through email (lorentz@lorentz.leidenuniv.nl) or telephone (071-5275505). NB This lecture will be in English! https://www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/events/2017/06/public-lecture-andrei-linde
Leiden Institute of Physics
Professor Renata Kallosh (Stanford University), one of the world’s leading theoretical physicists, will be this summer’s Lorentz Professor at the Leiden institute for theoretical physics. Tonight, Wednesday 14 June, she will deliver the Colloquium Ehrenfestii at Leiden University, 'From Planck to Escher' (http://lorentz.leidenuniv.nl/ce/) Her stay in Leiden will overlap with the visit of professor Andrei Linde, and they will jointly organize the Lorentz Center workshop on Theoretical Approaches to Cosmic Acceleration (3-7 July, 2017). More on the workshop: http://www.lorentzcenter.nl/lc/web/2017/913/info.php3?wsid=913&venue=Oort Professors Kallosh and Linde will give three joint lectures, 'From Cosmological Observations to Fundamental Physics', on June 15, 22, and 26 (13:45-15.30 hours). Symposium Trends in Theory 2015. Picture: beautiful surroundings of the conference location!
Today starts the 12th biennial symposium of the Dutch Research School of Theoretical Physics. The symposium is organized to give an overview of research activities in theoretical physics in the Netherlands. From magnetic skyrmions (Maxim Mostovoy, RUG) to extremal black holes (Alejandra Castro, UvA), from gravitational waves (Chris Van den Broek, Nikhef) to networks of cognition (Paul Tiesinga, RU Donders institute) and everything in between and beyond! Special evening lecture by Ionica Smeets, professor of Science Communication (Leiden University). Hope to see you all in Dalfsen! https://web.science.uu.nl/drstp/Conferences/Trends/2017/info.html

A Jewel of Equal Opportunities | CUI – The Hamburg Centre for Ultrafast Imaging
Congratulations to Prof. Cristiane Morais Smith (Utrecht University), who was awarded the Mildred Dresselhaus Prize 2016. The prize comes with the Dresselhaus Guest professorship program at the Centre for Ultrafast Imaging at Hamburg University. Mildred Dresselhaus, now a retired professor at MIT, has engaged herself all her professional life in the promotion of women in natural sciences. During the award ceremony in Hamburg, Prof. Andreas Hemmerich called Morais Smith a perfect role model and his favorite proof against gravity. In his honorary speech, he outlined her path of life starting in a small village in Brazil to her engagement as a highly acclaimed physics professor at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. In between she worked for the Bank of Brazil to finance her studies, for example, gained a degree in French literature, and learned six languages. Nowadays, a lot of interested colleagues in Hamburg are looking forward to collaborate in the field of topological states. Cristiane Morais Smith dedicated her prize to the many women before her, like for example Emmy Noether, who never got anything.
