A little information about cold frames courtesy of RHS Gardening - In autumn they are useful in protecting cuttings and young plants from cooler, unsettled weather and the first frosts (but only mild frosts). In winter, coldframes and mini-greenhouses can be used to shield alpines from rain and so prevent them from rotting. They can also be used to overwinter young annuals and other plants. A layer of bubble plastic can be installed on the inside to provide some insulation against frost and provide additional draught proofing. However, the bubble plastic will reduce light and ventilation. Throughout the year, these structures can be used to grow a range of edible crops, and other plants.

Jobs in the Garden: Lawn Care - Looking after the lawn in August is weather determined, at times. For example, if it has been wet and growth abundant, lower the mower blades and collect any grass clippings. If the weather has been hot and dry, there will not have been much growth, so you can set the mower blades high and leave any clippings to act as a mulch. By leaving the clippings they will preserve any moisture there is and keep the grass looking green as long as possible. Be on the look out for weeds. They will be more prevalent in wet weather. If possible remove them, if not use a specialist weed killer, especially for lawns. It is also time to check the grass and prepare it for any re-sowing that might have to be done. Optimal time for sowing is September. Spray first with a glyphosate-based spray. Then cultivate the area thoroughly and let the soil settle. If you are reseeding an existing area, repeat as above, but sow directly onto the dying sod about a week later. Don’t dig or rake over. Leave the seeds be. If the lawn needs feeding, if it is pale in colour, do so, but only when the soil is moist. #jobsinthegarden #lawncare #august

Jobs in the garden: Lavender - Cut the lavender for drying, choose newly opened flowers - they have the best fragrance, then hang up the cut stems in a cool, dark place. Photo: Altmount Gardens, Carlow - Lavender walk.
