We at Vetcare Portlaoise are proud to work alongside the most FANTASTIC local rescues. There is nothing we wouldn't do for them and vice versa! We are at their beck and call day and night and we know we can ring them at ANY stage and they will always be there to save a sick, injured, stray animal. They NEVER say no. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank Cara Dog Rescue, Laois SPCA and Husky Rescue Ireland. Ye do such fantastic work and don't get enough praise or recognition. We have donation baskets in our practise if anyone is willing to donate items or food that strays are always in need of. This includes kitten food (it's kitten season at the moment), dog and cat toys, puppy pads, dog beds, harnesses, dog food, lurcher or greyhound coats etc.. PLEASE support your local rescues. They are all volunteers and give up their time, home and sometimes sanity to make sure no stray is left abandoned, injured or scared.

Unfortunately, now is that time of year when pesticides are being sprayed. We have had some patients present recently with symptoms of poisoning most likely due to ingestion of toxic chemicals after being exposed to pesticides. Please be careful when using these and make sure to use pet friendly alternatives. Make sure your residence committee is aware of this if it is being done on a large scale. We have been made aware of certain housing estates spraying what we think is ant killer in particular. This can be toxic to cats as it can contain permethrin or boric acid.
