Drivers urged to check for faulty tyres as new rules come into force today Although it is already an offence to drive with defective or worn tyres, motorists will now face a fine of €80 as well as two penalty points to be applied on the license. Those who do not pay the fine immediately and are convicted in court will receive four penalty points. Acting Minister for Transport Paschal Donohoe announced the new road safety measure earlier this week, saying that it is "intended to promote greater awareness among motorists of the hazards of driving with tyres that are not in roadworthy condition". A recent study by the Road Safety Authority found that faulty tyres were the most significant in-vehicle factor in fatal collisions, and reported that such factors played a role in one in eight fatal crashes between 2008 and 2012. The RSA have urged drivers to have their car tyres checked once a month at a garage.
