The 4 Lanterns is a great example of a family run business, that has moved with the times & adapted to ever changing trends. From the beginning the 4 Lanterns have always been a family concern. Frank Grimes & his 3 brothers, with the support of their parents invested in their first outlet in Sligo. They learnt everything about the fast food business & opened Sligo in 1970, 40 years ago this year. In 1977 Lower Main Street Letterkenny opened followed over the years with shops on Port Rd. Letterkenny, Buncrana, Donegal Town & recently opened Ballybofey.

The reputation of the 4 Lanterns brand remains as strong today as it did 40 years ago. There is probably no one in, or who has visited the North West of Ireland that hasn’t had a Big 4 or a Snack Box as is evidence in the photographs across.

Frank Grimes now works as a consultant for the company & has handed over the reigns to the next generation Kevin, Sean, Oran, Marie & Edel. The Grimes family work together closely, they each have their own responsibilities & they work hard to share the workload. They are not afraid to do the jobs themselves that they would ask others to do.

In 2010 they were presented with an opportunity of a new venture & have opened three 4 Lanterns SUBS outlets in the past 6 months. Introducing recession specials have kept the 4 Lanterns & 4 Lanterns SUBS customers coming back again & again.

The 4 Lanterns have been well known for always investing their money back into the community by sponsoring local sporting events & supporting local charities.

Now employing 170 staff in Donegal, the 4 Lanterns staff have been quoted as stating that the Grimes family are the best employer in the North West. “Straight & honest”, “just brilliant”, they do everything right, I love my job”.

This year saw Kevin Grimes winning the Letterkenny Business Person of the Year award. Back in 2002 Frank also won this award & to date, they are the first family in Letterkenny to win this award twice.
