1st June 2017: The founding of Lions Clubs International in Chicago Illinois, one hundred years ago, is celebrated on An Post’s new international postage stamp. The €1.35 stamp which covers standard letter postage anywhere in the world, was designed by Dublin company Red Dog and features a photograph by Paul McCarthy from 2016 Loins Holiday Week.. Lions Club International is the world’s largest voluntary service organisation with a presence in over 200 countries and has more than 1.4 million volunteers worldwide. There are 2,700 members in 116 clubs across the island of Ireland, north and south. With their motto ‘We Serve’, Lions organise projects to help vulnerable and elderly people within their own communities, and in addition Lions undertake humanitarian work worldwide in areas such as aiding street children, and preventing blindness. Paul Allen, District Governor of Lions Clubs International in Ireland, expressed his appreciation that the Lions Clubs work in serving their communities has been recognised by An Post with this special international stamp, reflecting the global reach of Lions Clubs International: ‘It is a great honour to have a Lions Clubs stamp issued to mark the centenary of our organisation. In the 60 years that Lions have operated in Ireland, our membership has grown, based on serving the needs of local communities. In a few weeks, the Lions Clubs in Ireland will again host more than 600 guests at our annual Holiday Project in Trabolgan, Co. Cork. Lions Clubs in Ireland are also well known for their commitment to the prevention of blindness through Diabetes Screening, for our Annual Food Appeal at Christmas and for hundreds of community service projects at national and local levels’. Galway Lions Club are running an AM AM in Galway Golf Club, on Thursday 18th May 2017 to raise funds towards the construction of Safe Centres for Syrian refugee children. Lebanon a country approx 1/7 the size of Ireland with a population of 4.5 million has around two million Syrian refugees over half of whom are children and 300,000 of whom do not have any schooling. Norwegian Lions Clubs, with financial help from colleagues in Sweden and the U.K have taken the lead in building Safe Centres. Based on a UNICEF model and costing approx €100,000, each Safe Centre consists of a number of classrooms, nutrition and health centre and a play area providing basic health care and education for the refugee children. Annual running costs for a centre are about é100k as 10-12 personnel are required daily to cover two shifts with 200-300 children being accommodated per shift. Lions Clubs in Ireland have set a target of funding the construction and running costs of one centre. Galway Lions Club would welcome any support you can give to this event. Cost per team of 4 is €200 or you can sponsor a tee box for €50 contact Brendan McDermott on 087 0931790.
