Make your tea medicinal - CNM Ireland - College of Naturopathic Medicine - A leading provider of a range of natural health training courses

Starting small is often the best guidance for big results. Sometimes the right approach for our clients is to start with smaller positive steps. Changes which can be incorporated with minimal effort often have the most impact because they are goals which can be achieved. Once some small successes have been made, they will have the confidence to take on more challenging goals. A great example of this is an article written by CNM graduate, Jacqueline Ryan Dip NT mNTOI about making a tiny yet healthful switch to something people are already doing… drinking a cup of tea! Make your tea Medicinal!

Stress is something that in this day and age we all feel. Whether it be simple daily stresses such as running late for an appointment or larger stresses of work, family, health, or even our own thoughts and worries, no matter how big or little the stress is, it causes the same reactions in our bodies and if it is ongoing it can affect our health drastically. We often don't realize how stressed we are until our bodies show us though signs and symptoms for example poor immune system, skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, exhaustion, insomnia, digestive issues, aches and pains and tense muscles, cognitive and emotional symptoms. Although stress is an unavoidable part of our life, there are many things we can do to try and manage it. If you would like some tips on how to support your stress response naturally read the article I wrote below, which was previously published in the Galway Advertiser.

Grain Free Flapjacks. Made these at the weekend and they are simply delicious. There a great breakfast bar, snack, post exercise bar or even dessert and so easy to make. The packed full of protein, healthy fats, nutrients and guaranteed to keep you full. Ingredients: Base 350 mixed seeds and nuts of your choice. 50g Desiccated coconut 3 tbsp of cacao nibs 50g melted coconut oil. 4 tablespoons of almond butter. 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 tsp ground cinnamon 3 tbsp of coconut sugar 2 eggs. Chocolate topping 4 tbsp coconut oil 4-6 tbsp raw cacao powder (depending on how rich you like it) 2 tbsp of raw unprocessed honey Desiccated coconut to sprinkle on top. Directions. Put all dry base ingredients in a blender... Pulse so that the nuts and seeds are broken up into smaller pieces but they still have a bite in them. Add wet base ingredients to the dry and blend until everything is combined and pieces of the nuts and seeds can still be seen. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and pour base mixture into it, spread evenly. Bake at 180 degrees for 20 -25 minutes, until golden. To make the chocolate topping put all ingredients except the desiccated coconut into a pan on medium heat and melt. Keep stirring as the chocolate thickens. Once happy with the consistency spread onto the base and sprinkle the desiccated coconut on top. Allow to cool and enjoy. Store in fridge or freeze. Tip: to make these for kiddies lunch boxes, make completely with seeds and replace the almond butter with tahini.

Golden Turmeric Milk - CNM Ireland - College of Naturopathic Medicine - A leading provider of a range of natural health training courses

Many people show a face or laugh when they hear me recommend turmeric or see that I add it to most foods in my diet.. including smoothies… but here’s some of the reasons why.  It exerts very powerful antioxidant effects, enabling it to protect healthy cells by neutralizing free radicals and boosts the body’s own antioxidant enzyme activity. This property can help prevent cancer, especially of the digestive system; particularly the colon.  Lowers your risk of heart disease.  Delays aging and fights off age-related chronic diseases and has been shown to lead to various improvements in the pathological process of Alzheimer’s disease.  Improvements in those with rheumatoid arthritis, muscle and joint pain reducing stiffness, joint swelling.  It’s a natural pain killer.  Has a role in the management of IBD, such as crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.  Good for psoriasis and other inflammatory skin disorders.  Turmeric is also great for dogs, especially if they are suffering with any joint or muscle pain. They supposedly don’t mind the taste, although my sisters dog begs to differ who takes it daily for osteoarthritis, but he has no problem eating it when its mixed in with his dog food. :) Add it to curry’s, soups, stews, stir-fry’s, smoothies, juices and tea, always add black pepper and a healthy fat to improve its bio-availability. Follow the link to see my article on how to make your own Turmeric tea.
