RT on Twitter

'YOU ARE FAKE NEWS' The decision by President-elect Donald Trump to ridicule or silence CNN, Buzzfeed, and the BBC at today's press conference in New York has truly scary implications for democracy in the US. Hitler used to ridicule and silence those who criticized him in the same way, before seizing absolute power in Germany. Scary times. No doubt there is an issue with "fake news" across the media. But this is the man who has been embraced by extreme right wing news sites and Fox News, hardly beacons of admirable journalism. https://twitter.com/RT_com/status/819231235742584832

Appreciate the darkness and give thanks for the light!

GIVING THANKS FOR THE LIGHT Lovely blog post by Charlie Adley, who writes a weekly column about life in the West of Ireland for the Connacht Tribune. As an Englishman living in Co Galway, Charlie can have a very fresh perspective on things. And he has written honestly for years about his own battles with depression. http://doubledoublevision.blogspot.ie/2017/01/appreciate-darkness-and-give-thanks-for.html?spref=fb

Galway

TELLING HER STORY! Buildings all across Ireland will be illuminated with installations tomorrow night to mark the contribution which women have made to Irish history. Herstory is the brainchild of Mullingar woman Melanie Lynch, who became concerned that females seemed to have been almost "airbrushed" out of Irish history during last year's 1916 centenary celebrations. As a result, she got in touch with like-minded souls all across Ireland to come up with a new and innovative programme of events for Nollaig na mBan (Women's Christmas) on January 6. The Galway events take place at Lynch's Castle in the heart of the city from 5.30pm tomorrow. Details are available here: http://www.herstory.ie/galway/

The Coming War on China - a film by John Pilger - Official trailer

THE COMING WAR ON CHINA This was probably the most powerful documentary film I watched in 2016. It was uploaded to YouTube over the Chirstmas holidays. There are those who may accuse John Pilger of being alarmist regarding the US military's presence across Asia. But there is no doubt the treatment of the Bikini islanders was heartbreaking. It's well worth an hour and 40 minutes of your time. People seem to forget that only one country on earth has used the nuclear bomb on civilians, causing hundreds of thousands of deaths. And the number of US bases dotted all around the Pacific is bound to unnerve other nations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3hbtM_NJ0s&list=PLg1qN2pbM-qFf0BVSWNVVk52GllWdkISL

Mark Kennedy

HOLLYWOOD, HOMELESSNESS AND ME My interview with Galway native Mark Kennedy, which Galway Video News uploaded to YouTube following his death at the end of October. Mark completely turned his life around after being a homeless street drinker for five years. Farewell Mark, a huge loss to Galway in 2016. The city's Famine Memorial Park is his lasting legacy. https://youtu.be/zWIwsGVS9Wk

Dear Daily Telegraph ...

BLOG POST OF THE YEAR? A few people have asked me what was my most popular blog post of 2016. This rant, in response to the Daily Telegraph, didn't generate the most traffic, but it attracted a flood of emails, mostly positive, from Irish people all over the world. I wrote it after two articles in the Telegraph last March likened the 1916 leaders to ISIS. My blog was picked up and used as an opinion piece by Irish Central. Needless to say, I didn't get a response from the Telegraph! http://ciarantierney.blogspot.ie/2016/03/dear-daily-telegraph.html

Jonathan Cook, journalist

FAKE NEWS AND THE GUARDIAN This is quite shocking, if only because The Guardian is the news organisation people respect the most in the UK. Truth becomes a casualty when stories are transformed into nothing more than 'click bait'.

The A to Z of my incredible year

THE JOYS OF A GAP YEAR Six years ago today, I wrote a blog post to mark the end of a 12 month career break which took me to Thailand, Malaysia, France, Switzerland, Spain, Panama, and Nicaragua. My experience of working with poor people in Nicaragua for 11 weeks remains the happiest of my life. It can be good to make a total change in life, and face your fears, sometimes ... If the opportunity arises. http://ciaransgapyear.blogspot.ie/2010/12/a-to-z-of-my-incredible-year.html
