Today the Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council held a ceremony to honour the Irish Naval Service with the Freedom of Entry to Dun Laoghaire. The event took place in the Harbour where the LE Eithne was berthed. The presentation was made by An Cathaoirleach Cllr Cormac Devlin. Much deserved praise was given to the Naval Service for the outstanding rescue missions they have completed overseas, rescuing over 15000 refugees. Local emergency services, both full time and voluntary were invited to the ceremony including the DL Civil Defence Unit Officer, DL Coast Guard, RNLI, DFB and Gardai. Following the ceremony a reception was held in the Town Hall.

Yesterday was the first of three regional competitions in which Dublin have three teams competing. It was the turn of South Dublin to test their skills in Wexford. Members from the DL Unit formed part of the team and were tested in Search/Communications, Medical and Footdrill aswell as team building exercises. Despite our best efforts, the team from Carlow won, so best of luck to the other Dublin teams taking part in Meath and Kildare over the coming weeks. Check out the link for photos of the day.

MEM Rest Centre Exercise
Dublin CD carried out a Mass Evacuation Exercise alongside DFB yesterday evening. The scenario involved upto 90 people being displaced from their homes on Ratra Rd in the Phoenix Park due to the flooding. CD were tasked with the job of transporting, registering and accommodating the evacuees in a Rest Centre in Cabra. Carried out in real time, it proved a valuable exercise and opportunity for the CD volunteers to carry out some tasks and roles that may not be experienced too often.
