Below is a picture of me close to my heaviest and leanest. In the image on the left I am in my early 20s and a size 12. In the picture on the right 20kg lighter in my late 20’s and now a size 6. If I were to ask you which picture I look healthiest, some would see nothing wrong with either image. The truth is I wasnt healthy in either picture and here’s why... During my teens I struggled with a binge eating which despite my activity levels my weight started to increase. I was super obsessed with weight, dieting and how I looked that it actually held me back. I partied and ate whatever I wanted with the view that I could just work it off. It didn’t work. When I finally cracked it; somewhere I found the motivation and desire to stick with the gym for a certain amount of time and chose to eat healthily, managing my calories, counting my macros and never slipping up, I lost over 20kg. 20kg!!! WOW, when I look back I think holy crap that was a heck of an amount to lose. But did I feel any better? I was avoiding social events for fear of putting it all back on. I would avoid family occasions, have my dinner at home as opposed to celebrating with my loved ones for fear of "slipping up", going overboard. And I felt totally super guilty if I even sniffed at a pizza. What I thought was "being passionate about my health" had now turned into an unhealthy obsession. Something I haven’t told most people is that this anxiety (and probably my excessive yo-yo dieting, stressful job and unhealthy eating habits) lead to digestive problems and food sensitivities. Bloating, digestive discomfort, diarrhoea, constipation, burping, flatulence, abdominal cramps on a daily basis. All this stress and anxiety had lead my digestive system to ruin. My chronic calorie restriction threw my hormones out of balance too. Moodiness, PMS, anxiety, crying for no reason, chronic chronic fatigue (and I mean I was so tired I had to take a nap every day), complete dependency on caffeine (now my digestion was so bad that I couldn't even drink coffee for fear it would set off diarrhoea so now I was taking 2-4 caffeine tablets a day - yes, you read that correct A DAY!!! ) And this was just to get me through to 5pm when I could make it home for a nap before having to cook dinner or whatever was planned. I had never felt tiredness like it!! My menstrual cycle was just all over the place and my weight was starting to climb up. I didn’t know what was wrong because I thought I was doing everything right. I remember going to my GP who told me I was depressed! I felt like I had failed. Here I was a health professional (I was working as a dance and exercise coach at the time) trying to educate my clients and help them lose weight and improve health I couldn’t even do it for myself! I felt like a fraud. The more I thought about it the more I realised I had nothing to be depressed about. I was having none of it.This wasn't the answer I was looking for. When I decided to take a more natural approach I sought help from a Nutritionist and through making changes to my diet as well as my lifestyle we were able to balance my hormones, support my digestion and the weight started to come down. I could fit back into my tight figure hugging dresses that I loved and my relationship with food, weight loss and my body changed for the better. I now knew how to nourish my body, love how it looks and feels without being obsessed about it. Do I count calories, macros or points now? No Do go out and socialise? Yes Do I drink alcohol ? Yes Do I eat out with friends and family? yes Do I worry or stress about gaining weight? No Do I treat myself to chocolate and goodies? Yes This is one of the reasons I decided to become a Nutritionist. I wanted to help others who have similar experience to me and this is why I have developed an online programme to help women just like me. http://www.chrysaliswellness.ie/eat-smart-feel-fabulous/ DO YOU EXPERIENCE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING? Weight gain / difficulty losing weight PMS /Irritability Fatigue / Afternoon slump Poor memory / lack of focus or concentration Bloating / Digestive discomfort If you answered YES to any of the above then this programme can help you look and feel FABULOUS! As women we can sometimes take on too much. We are busy with work, deadlines, family, after school activities and household duties. Going from fast paced deadline focused work environment to mummy mode; helping kids with homework, trying to make it home to take little Chloe to dance class or little Timmy to football and then back home to kitchen mode we barely have time to look after ourselves. Soon we are run ragged, our ability to get through the day slows down, we’re tired half way through the morning and we find it hard to focus without sugar/ carbohydrates and caffeine. Soon we cant get through the day without 2 or 3 coffees, we’re eating on the run and soon our weight increases, and were wearing baggy dresses just to cover our tummy. Bloating, flatulence and digestive pains are adding to our stress and worry but rarely will we priorities our own health. These are all signs and symptoms that our busy lifestyle is taking its toll on our health however there are things we can implement into our busy lifestyles that can help! 6 ways to avoid the Christmas Bloat

Statistics show that the average weight gain over the Christmas period is 4lbs. 4lbs is not really a lot but when you are planning to stay on top of your health goals or if you have been making good progress thus far 4lbs is the last thing you want to see at the end of the holidays. You can still enjoy Christmas treats without the added poundage and here are some of my tips! Christmas cards for all of my clients done and dusted! This exercise made me really reflect over the last year: I've worked with over 100 people across all 4 provinces to help them improve their health and wellness and I remember each and every one, wrote a little personal message in each to remind them of how far they have come and how awesome they are for taking more than just a steps to make positive changes. Some lost weight, many improved their energy and sleep, some got pregnant, others had babies, some ran marathons and others learned to cook. I feel really proud of everyone big or small no matter what you achieved be proud that you even started. If your looking to make changes to your health and wellbeing get in touch today and start 2017 on the best foot! Im not a huge fan of New Year's resolutions as I feel you can make a change at any time of the day or year. For example, I had a guy contact me yesterday to book in an appointment to discuss losing weight. 10 days before Christmas! usually quite unheard of at this time of year. You never know when it just clicks with someone. Right! Now is the time to make that call and he did and Il support him right through Christmas and into the new year. Whatever your goal, you need to make a move in order for it to become a reality. Dont wait for January 1st or a Monday to make a change do it when it clicks, you will know and youl just do it. no hesitations. Elysia x PS: The clinic is open until Friday 23rd and I still have a couple of slots left so if you have decided you want to make a change before Christmas or need support getting through Christmas you can email (info@chrysaliswellnes.ie) or call me 085 1441163 today to make an appointment. ;-)
