A USB wall socket is ideal for charging your portable devices such as a smartphone or tablet. No longer do you need to find multiple plugs just put the USB lead straight into the mains USB socket and keep your devices fully charged. The beauty with this type of product is that plugs can still be utilised for other products requiring power whilst USB charged products charge.

Did a job last week in a local pharmacy replacing spotlights with LED spotlights. The new LED spots use 90 percent less power. This will give the customer a saving of approx. €1100 per year in electricity costs. As the replacement cost €1200 this means the initial costs will be covered in just over a year. It's all savings from then on. Plus little or no bulb replacements in the next five years. And the carbon footprint just got a bit smaller! - It's a win win. Phone me on 0862525331 and I can advise you about LED replacements.

Is Your Home Wiring In Need of an Upgrade? Even if your home was built to last, it could be that the wiring within your walls is in need of an upgrade. Especially true if you know your home’s wiring to be more than 40 years old, or if you’ve recently purchased an older home and aren’t sure about the electrical work. Upgrading a home’s wiring is not a small job, but it need not be a large rewiring job either. The important things to look out for are the earthing and the main fuse board and RCD protection. Age Isn’t Everything Older wiring systems aren't inherently dangerous; a professional electrician may be able to inspect such a system and declare it safe and functional. However, these older systems may have an old fuse board or an old earthing system which is simply not suitable for today's demands. What to look out for Electrical sockets that are warm or hot to the touch Appliances that frequently give off mild electric shocks Flickering lights Unexplained smell of smoke or melted plastic Not sure if your home is in need of a wiring upgrade? Schedule an inspection with me so you can be sure your wiring and wiring is safe. Phone Ian 0862525331 now

**** First Fake Electrician Fined in Irish History **** I took this story below from the local newspaper. .................................................................................................................. Feb 12 2016 The first Irish prosecution of a fake electrician took place after a man was found carrying out illegal electrical work in homes under the guise of a registered electrician. The Wicklow man received a six-month sentence after his work was found to have posed a serious safety risk to the occupants of the house. He was working on the attic conversion of a house, Sean Ward of the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) watchdog told Naas District Court that the work was of poor quality and created a serious safety hazard for the occupants of the house, which included two adults and three young children. Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed a six-month custodial sentence with no time suspended due to the severity of the risk posed to consumers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In my work nearly every day I come across various degrees of badly done work, some just sloppy but some downright dangerous. As for saving money with cheap work, in my experience most “cheap”bad quality electrical work actually costs the customer more money in the long run. Not to mention the safety risks of bad uninsured electrical work. So do yourself a favour and hire a registered electrician. You will be glad you did !

ARE YOU GETTING THAT WARM FEELING IN YOUR SOCKETS? And What Should You Do About It? One of the most important things for ensuring the security of your home’s electrical systems is touching your sockets or switches to feel if they are warm. Because if they are, you could be facing some problems. Diagnosing Your Warm Plug To be clear, a warm socket doesn’t mean you have a pending electrical failure or fire hazard. It does mean that something is happening behind the wall, and you should pay attention to it. There are six basic reasons why a plug or socket is warm – and they build upon each other in terms of intensity and level of concern: 1. The “Wall Wart” is Working Having a charger, modem, or basic electronic device plugged in can make a socket feel warm. Simply remove the plug from the socket, and then wait a half an hour – if it hasn’t cooled down, either replace the charger or investigate the outlet further. 2. Too Much Demand at the Wall You might just have too many plugs in one socket, maybe you are using a multi socket power strip. They may be convenient, but you have to watch how much energy they’re drawing. You just might need to unplug a few items and place them somewhere else. 3. Damaged Wiring Loose terminals or wiring inside an socket or switch will generate extra heat simply because of the flow of electricity. Such issues should be corrected immediately. 4. Broken Infrastructure If the visible parts of a switch or plug are broken or it is discoloured from heat, replace the entire thing immediately and use the opportunity to investigate the larger system. 5. Too Much Demand on the Circuit Depending upon how your electrical wiring was designed, you might have an excessive amount of current flowing to a switch or socket. You probably need to rewire the circuits so all the plugs and switches in a given room aren’t on the same circuit, and that’s not a DIY home improvement project. Call in a professional electrician for help. 6. Incorrectly Sized Fuse or Breaker Such an issue will typically occur in an older home that hasn’t experienced any recent code updates. Basically, older electrical systems simply aren’t rated to handle the demand load of modern electronics, so if your outlets and switches are warm, it might be time to upgrade your electrical wiring across the board. What should I do next? When you get that warm feeling in a socket do everything possible to minimize any risk of an electrical fire. If limiting the number of items plugged into the outlet doesn't eliminate the trouble, or if you find damage or loose wiring, it's safest to call in an electrician to assess and correct the issues. We can call to your house in the North Dublin area and find out what is wrong very quickly
