Ex-Ireland manager Staunton declared bankrupt

Ex-Ireland manager Staunton declared bankrupt! Former Ireland football manager and international player Steve Staunton has been declared bankrupt in the UK. Share Go To Documents filed with the courts in Britain show that Mr Staunton (47), who is originally from Co Louth, was declared bankrupt in April of this year with the period of bankruptcy to last until April 15, 2017. Mr Staunton is one of Ireland's greatest ever footballers and played for Liverpool, Aston Villa and Coventry City in his distinguished career, and won more than 100 international caps. He went on to manage the international team between 2006 and 2007, though his tenure was not considered successful. When he was first appointed as Ireland manager, it was reported that Mr Staunton had extensive property interests in three countries, worth millions. As well as property in and around his native Louth, he also owned extensive property in the English Midlands and on the Spanish mainland. In November last year, he opened the Steve Staunton Football Academy, based at Lichfield City FC, near his home in Shenstone, in the British Midlands. Over the weekend, the 'Sun on Sunday' reported Mr Staunton's bankruptcy came after he invested in three Ingenious Media schemes - Stuart Films, Zeus Films and Tudor Films. 'Avenging Angels', 'Footballers Wives 2' and 'The Three Stooges' are among the productions that the companies were behind. The British revenue, HMRC, launched an investigation into thousands of high profile individuals who invested in film funds between 2002 and 2010. Ingenious had targeted high net-worth individuals, including footballers, for investment. HMRC disputed a scheme whereby contributors were legally allowed to offset losses against tax liabilities. Dispute Mr Staunton filed for bankruptcy three months before some investors with Ingenious were sent Accelerated Payment Notices for tax. It was unclear if Mr Staunton received such a notice and there is no allegation of any wrongdoing on his behalf. It was also reported that he was in dispute with a builder over renovations to his cottage. Mr Staunton has set up a foundation, which has fundraised for causes including Crumlin Children's Hospital. Last month he spoke about his love of golf and said he had his hip done last year. In 2006, while managing the international football team, he was involved in a bizarre incident in which he was allegedly threatened with an imitation gun. A man, with a history of mental health issues, was arrested after allegedly threatening to kill Mr Staunton with a plastic imitation Uzi sub-machine gun. His last managerial position was with League Two club Darlington, where his tenure ended in March 2010. He also served a stint as Gary McAllister's assistant at Leeds United and worked for Sunderland as a match assessor, until June 2013. According to the notice of Mr Staunton's bankruptcy he was not working at the time. He was most recently seen on November 19, at the funeral for Aston Villa legend Dalian Atkinson, who was killed by a police Taser in an incident at his home. http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/exireland-manager-staunton-declared-bankrupt-35249655.html

Bankruptcy Case Study - Sinead Sinead is a single mother of two, who had a good job until two years ago, when the company she worked for was forced to close. Until her job ended, she was able to manage her repayments, but now has outstanding debts of €55,000, owed to three different creditors, with no means of meeting her repayments. As she was renting privately, she did not have to worry about losing her home, but she was surviving on social welfare payments only. As Sinead could not offer a proposal such as a debt settlement arrangement to her creditors, because of her limited income, it was decided was the best way to deal with her debt. Her family provided her with the funds to go bankrupt, and very soon afterwards, this was declared in the high court. Sinead has since secured part-time work, and while her financial situation has improved somewhat, her income is still below ISI Reasonable Living Expense guidelines, and therefore she does not have to give any of her new income to her creditors.
