Thai Yoga Massage (floor) Sometimes described as ‘applied Hatha Yoga’, Thai Yoga Massage focuses on joint mobilisation, stretching, counter stretches and deep pressure along energy lines. Massaging points along these lines relieves muscle tension, chronic and acute pain and realigns the whole body towards homeostasis, the bodies continuing impetus to find natural balance. Until recently it was in temple, the Wat, where massage was taught and practiced and it is in this spirit of metta and mindfulness that Thai Yoga Massage is practiced. Traditional Thai Massage draws on its north Indian heritage. Legend has it that the founder was a close friend of The Buddha and the physician of the Sangha. Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha is mentioned in the Pali Canon, the scriptures of Theravada Buddhism which is practiced today mainly in Sri Lanka, Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. Ceremonies and rituals honouring ‘The Father of Medicine’ are still a twice daily ritual in the Massage Hospital in Chaing Mai.
