17th Shackleton Autumn School 27th -30th October 2017 17th Shackleton Autumn School it will take place over the October Bank Holiday weekend 27th -30th October 2017. The School is celebrating its seventeenth year and attracts participants from all over the world. The Autumn School was founded in 2000 to commemorate the achievements of Kilkea-born Ernest Shackleton. Widely regarded for his exploration, leadership skills, resourcefulness and endurance, the name ‘Shackleton’ has universal recognition and appeal. His exploits have been popularised in books, film and theatre. Travelling exhibitions draw record crowds to museums worldwide. The School has established Athy as a centre for polar research and promotes the study of the Polar Regions through environmental, historical and scientific research with particular reference to Ireland. The Autumn School affords the opportunity for Irish participants to engage with current international research. It is the only forum for polar research and study in Ireland which works in conjunction with many international bodies, including the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, Fram Museum Norway, Dundee and institutes in South Georgia, Spain and as far afield as Tokyo The Shackleton Autumn School consists of an official opening on the Friday night, an exhibition, a series of lectures and an annual dinner on the Saturday, a series of lecturers, a film and drama on the Sunday and a bus tour to Shackleton’ s countryside on the Monday.
