Sexual Abuse Breaking the silence of Sexual Abuse is one of the most difficult things to do – even as an adult. No one can tell you what your life has been like or what kind of coping mechanisms you’ve used to survive; only you can know the impact Sexual Abuse has on your life and what you have had to do to survive it. Every day the disturbing images may haunt you as though they were just happening right there, in that moment. The same feelings of pain cripple your body and the same terror drenches your mind. The hopelessness and desperation of your past makes every achievement not enough and every smile a hidden agony. Even when life in the present is great, and you feel proud or accomplished in that moment, the past takes it away with a sudden flashback that makes you feel worthless – even still. Survivors of Sexual Abuse are some of the most heroic people we have the privilege to know. We understand you don’t often feel this privileged but we at MCC have helped thousands of survivors reach their goals in therapy and leave the past right where it should be – behind. We understand the challenges you face everyday, trying to fit into functional adaptation whilst dealing with flashbacks, tremors, and disturbing thoughts or beliefs about yourself. We understand that in some cases, when you see a rape sceen on T.V your biological system reacts in arousal whilst you feel sick, disgusted, and horrified with the sight of it. As odd as this may sound to some, these are common symptoms for those who have suffered sexual abuse. Sadly, those who suffer in this way may often find themselves engaging in “promiscuous behaviour”. This is not at all how it is presumed. Often, Sexual Abuse survivors give sex freely because they feel powerless, worthless, or have the detrimental belief that “it’s going to happen anyway – even if I say No!” At MCC we Specialise in helping Abuse and Trauma survivors get past their past. The treatment approaches we use are EMDR, CBT, Psychodynamic therapy & Person Centred Therapy. For more information click the link below. www.midlandscounsellingclinic.ie

Brian Walsh Hello, my name is Brian Walsh, and I am a professionally qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT), Counsellor, and Psychotherapist working one to one with individuals, and business clients. I have a successful record of providing individual professional treatment to adults in the following areas: acute stress, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, physical trauma, psychological trauma (survivors of emotional, physical and sexual abuse), life changing health diagnosis, and family carer burden. I also support victims of crime to recover from the impact of their experience. I hold a BSc (Hons) Degree in Counselling & Psychotherapy (First Class); a Professional Diploma in Counselling & Psychotherapy; and a Professional Certificate in Positive Psychotherapy. I trained with the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre in the Counselling Process for Childhood Sexual Abuse, and the HSE in Applied Suicide Intervention Skills. I am a pre-accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. My approach to therapy is grounded in empirically supported and scientifically valid techniques on the process of change, and treatment approaches that are effective. I believe that my clients have the desire and the capacity to grow towards fulfilling their true potential, create the life they want, and that they are the experts on their own lives. I will therefore work with you to help you to understand yourself and your life challenges more fully, and support you to find and develop your own character strengths and inner resources. My work is influenced by my belief in a person’s potential for personal growth following a life adversity or traumatic event. As such, I endeavour to broaden the scope of traditional psychotherapy by accentuating the client’s positive resources such as positive emotions, character strengths, resilience and meaning, in addition to attending to the symptoms of the client’s distress. I welcome you to make an initial appointment to meet with me by contacting me directly at 086 7851112.
