Have you met Porkie our Cape porcupine? *Did you know that the sharp spikes on a porcupines back are called quills?* Quills help porcupines defend themselves from predators. They are designed to easily fall off and the porcupine will grow new quills in replacement. What better time is there than Valentine's day to admire some real life Lovebirds? ❤️😍 These little beauties are Black-cheeked Lovebirds, a parrot species native only to a small area in Zambia. 🍃 🌿 Black-cheeked Lovebirds were once considered a very popular pet, unfortunately throughout the 20th century​ this contributed towards a significant decline in their wild population as the birds were trapped and removed from their natural habitat. 🌲 🌳 The work of wildlife conservationists is helping to secure a brighter future for these little parrots, improved environmental education has led to a ban on trapping wild Black-cheeked Lovebirds. ⬇️ At present, the Black-cheeked Lovebirds are listed as a vulnerable species by the IUCN. However conservation work continues towards increasing the population of Black-cheeked Lovebirds and striving towards a sustainable future for this species. 💭 Find out more about the new Lovebirds at Tayto Park here...
