IN the age of laser facials and Botox, aromatherapy might seem outdated but essential oil expert Eve Taylor says it is the key to staying young, happy and relaxed At the age of 82 Eve Taylor has the skin of someone decades younger. She hasn’t succumbed to the latest chemical peel or gone under the knife but has instead taken a more natural approach to turning back the clock by using aromatherapy oils. Essential oils have been part of Eve’s daily skincare regime for the past 50 years and she is part of the reason they are so widely used today. When she founded her company Eve Taylor London in 1968 people looked on the therapeutic use of oils with suspicion. “They thought it was all cauldrons, witchcraft and hocus pocus,” she laughs. Now aromatherapy oils are used in beauty products across the globe and they are a multi-million pound business. In fact most of the products in your bathroom cabinet probably contain an oil or two. “There is more demand for oils now than ever before,” says Eve who remains at the helm of her company. “If you care for your skin with oils you won’t ever need Botox.” Eve insists everyone can use natural oils. All you need to decide is what you want them to do for you. There are oils to help you to unwind, give you energy and improve problem skin. Some oils can be used on their own but others need to be mixed with a base or carrier oil, such as sweet almond, £5.41 (eve-taylor. com). She does urge caution when choosing them. It’s important to go for the real deal and not chemical copies. “Don’t be fooled by the fancy names. If you want a lavender oil to relax you it needs to have come from a lavender plant, not a lab,” she says. However Eve has a keen interest in advances in skin technology. “I appreciate new skincare technology but I like combining it with traditional natural ingredients. “Hyaluronic acid, for example, is amazing. It allows your skin to stay hydrated. “However you still need a base of oils at the heart of your beauty regime for best results.” Banish Wrinkles To turn back the clock and keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay aromatherapy oils can be your skin’s secret weapon. They are particularly beneficial for mature skin that is in need of TLC. You should always apply oil to your skin first to give it a chance to sink in and get to work otherwise it will just sit on top of your moisturiser. TRY: Look out for products which contain rosewood, geranium or clary sage oil as they are often suitable for mature skin. Or mix the oils with a carrier oil and apply to your face. Eve also recommends aromatic galbanum oil as good for older skin. Mix with a little sweet almond oil and apply to the skin to keep it looking youthful. Time to unwind Aromatherapy oils are used to give spas their soothing scent and help create a deeply relaxing environment. Carefully selected oils can let you create the same effect in your home helping you de-stress after a long day. TRY: Sandalwood is a longtime favourite of Eve’s. “It’s the ideal oil for busy women because of its rejuvenating properties. Not only does it smell divine but it has a calming effect without making you tired.” She also recommends using eucalyptus oil to help you breathe deeply. Hold the bottle under your nose for three seconds then take a deep breath in.
