On the morning of August 17, many students and government officials join ceremonies to raise the red and white banner. After the flag raising, people usually gather for a little friendly neighborhood competition. The challenges include sack races and a kerupuk or cracker eating contest. One of the toughest – and most entertaining – is the palm tree climbing contest, a male-only event. The trunk of the tree is greased to make scaling it tough, but whoever gets to the top first gets dibs on prizes that range from t-shirts to bicycles. Lempuyang Temple, locally referred to as Pura Lempuyang Luhur, is one of Bali's oldest & most highly regarded temples, on par with Besakih (aka the 'mother temple' of Bali). “Friendliest staff and beautiful views - I stayed here with my boyfriend for five nights in a one bedroom pool villa overlooking the rice fields. The weather was quite grey and rainy during our stay but that did not bother us as there was plenty to do both at the resort and around town. I had massages and a facial which were great for rainy days in, they were even able to give us a couples massage in our villa so we didn't have to walk out in the rain. On days when we braved the rain we did yoga, explored the markets and streets and went white water rafting (which the receptionist organised for us). The resort offered a shuttle both into and out of town every two hours which was very helpful (it is roughly a 20 minute walk but due to the frequency of the shuttles we never walked in). All staff were extremely friendly and helpful, making our stay very enjoyable. The breakfast is excellent with plenty of options, some of my favourites including a beautiful fruit platter, freshly squeezed juices and Bircher muesli.
