HKU Visitor Centre
Description
As the front door to the University, the Visitor Centre welcomes prospective students, parents, alumni, and all visitors who want to know more about HKU. Opened in early 2014, The University of Hong Kong Visitor Centre is housed in the Workmen’s Quarters of the former Elliot Pumping Station and Filters site of the Water Supplies Department. This red brick rectangular building is one of the two historic buildings marking the entrance of the HKU Centennial Campus.
Constructed in 1918-19, the Workmen's Quarters is a single storey brick communal residence with three rooms which housed Chinese workers and watchmen. The building is a representative example of the basic accommodation provided for Chinese workmen’s on Government works sites. The architectural qualities and scale of this building are simple in nature. It is essentially intact both externally and internally. The Workmen's Quarters Building has been classified as a Grade III historic building and revitalized to become the HKU Visitor Centre.
