HKDR was founded in 2003 for the specific purpose of saving dogs and puppies from the Hong Kong Government's Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) Animal Management Centres, where around 10,000 dogs and puppies are destroyed every year. A lot them of are family pets that have been abandoned on the street or in country parks, while others have been directly surrendered. Many are puppies that are the result of irresponsible owners not desexing their pets, or are those born to abandoned or stray dogs. They all have one thing in common and that is that they are homeless and unwanted, and have just four days to live unless they are chosen for re-homing.

Only a small percentage of these dogs and puppies are lucky enough to be rescued by HKDR, after which the larger ones will be taken care of at the main Tai Po Homing Centre, while smaller dogs awaiting re-homing will stay at the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre. Puppies live at the HKDR base on Lamma Island, and are taken to Whiskers N Paws Puppy Adoption Afternoons at Horizon Plaza, Ap Lei Chau, every Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.

As much as possible, puppies and smaller dogs are placed in temporary foster care where they can live in a home environment before being permanently adopted. Our foster network plays a vital role in helping dogs overcome the trauma of being abandoned or their previous unhappy circumstances, such as those that are rescued from breeding farms.

救狗之家（Hong Kong Dog Rescue，簡稱HKDR）於2003年成立，目的為拯救於漁農自然護理署（漁護署）動物管理中心每年上萬隻被毀滅的成犬及幼犬，當中有很多都是被遺棄於街上或郊野公園等，亦有些是由棄養牠們的主人直接交予漁護署。很多幼犬都是不負責任的主人未有為寵物進行絕育的結果，或是被遺棄或流浪狗隻的後代。牠們的共通點是沒有家亦沒有人要，除非被選中等候領養，否則都會於四天之內被毀滅。

這些成犬及幼犬之中，只有少數幸運兒得以被救狗之家救出。成功獲救的大型犬會於大埔領養中心獲得照顧，小型犬則會到鴨脷洲領養中心等待牠們的新家；幼犬一般會待在南丫島的救狗之家基地，然後每逢星期日下午兩點到五點，被送到鴨脷洲新海怡廣場Whiskers N Paws寵物用品店內，參加幼犬領養日。

我們會盡量安排幼犬及小型犬由暫養家庭照顧，讓牠們被永久領養之前，能夠於家庭環境下生活。對於幫助狗隻走出被遺棄或曾於繁殖場生活等創傷經歷的陰霾，暫養家庭網絡實乃不可或缺。

除拯救及領養工作以外，公眾教育亦是救狗之家的使命之一。於2013年7月開幕，位於鴨脷洲領養中心對面的教育及訓練中心，正是為此而設。這個小小的地方將作舉辦各式工作坊及課堂之用，協助增進人狗之間的溝通，從而減少寵物被遺棄的情況。

Whiskers N Paws寵物用品店亦有舉辦救狗之家「老友狗狗訓練班」，教導大家如何做個負責任的主人，並提倡以正面獎勵為本的訓練方法。

Alongside the rescue and re-homing efforts, education is also an important part of HKDR's mission, and as part of that the Education & Training Centre was opened in July 2013, directly opposite the Ap Lei Chau Homing Centre. This small venue is used for a variety of workshops and classes, all of which are designed to help improve dog-human understanding and so reduce the number of pets being abandoned.
Whiskers N Paws also hosts the HKDR 'Positive Partners' Training Courses, which are designed to promote responsible pet ownership as well as reward-based training methods.
Dedication

HKDR is funded solely by private donations, sponsorship through the Life Saver Club programme, the sale of HKDR merchandise and fundraising events. All of the dogs and puppies that HKDR take in for re-homing are health checked, vaccinated, given flea, tick and heartworm prevention and de-sexed. Those who require additional veterinary treatment or surgery are given the best available. Dogs with behaviour problems are rehabilitated using Positive Reinforcement training methods to make them ready for adoption.
