Vor dem Wochenende noch einmal ein Gebetsaufruf: Gestern Nacht wurde die Sebastian Kolowa Memorial University der Northeastern Diocese der Ev.-Lutherischen Kirche von Tansania von einer Gruppe schwer bewaffneter Männer überfallen. Sie brachen Türen auf und bedrohten Studierende in ihren Unterkünften. Als sich ihnen ein Wachmann entgegenstellt, ermordeten sie ihn. Später brannten die Männer zwei Studierendenheime nieder und verschwanden wieder in der Nacht. Zurzeit weiß niemand, wer hinter diesem Überfall steckt. Die Northeastern Diocese bittet aber dringend um unsere Fürbitte. Der unten stehende Prayer Alert ist vor wenigen Minuten international versandt worden. Before the weekend, we ask for your prayers again as we have received very disturbing news from the Northeastern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania. Last night, a very well-equipped and armed group attacked the SEKOMU University of the diocese, breaking down doors and threatening to kill students in the dormitories. When a security officer started to argue with these men, they killed him. Later, they burned down two of the student dormitories and disappeared again. It is not clear who is behind this attack. Please keep the North Eastern Diocese and the university community in your prayers.

Die VEM trauert um Dr. Ulrich Beyer - Rev. Dr. Ulrich Beyer has passed away: Dr. Ulrich Beyer, der die VEM in hohem Maße prägte, ist am 29. August 2016 in Bielefeld von uns gegangen. Der am 3. Juli 1936 in Hagen geborene promovierte Theologe lehrte von 1966 bis 1974 als Dozent an der Nommensen-Universität der HKBP in Pematang Siantar (Nordsumatra, Indonesien). Nach seiner Rückkehr war er von 1974 bis 1980 als Indonesien-Referent bei der VEM tätig. Im Anschluss daran wechselte er als Oberkirchenrat, zuständig für Mission und Ökumene, in das Landeskirchenamt der Evangelischen Kirche von Westfalen. Von 1991 bis 1996 bekleidete er das Amt des Präses der VEM und von 1996 bis 2000 die Position des Vize-Moderators der VEM. In all diesen Funktionen hatte er einen wesentlichen Anteil an der Entwicklung der VEM hin zu einer internationalen gleichberechtigten Gemeinschaft von protestantischen Kirchen in Afrika, Asien und Deutschland, die vor mehr als 20 Jahren eingeleitet wurde. Dadurch hat er dazu beigetragen, den Begriff der Mission und die Arbeit der Mission neu zu beschreiben. In Anbetracht seiner kirchenübergreifenden Verdienste und seines langjährigen, treuen Engagements wird die VEM-Gemeinschaft Dr. Ulrich Beyer in besonderer Erinnerung behalten. Herr Dr. Beyer hinterlässt seine Frau Renate, seine Töchter Annika und Susanne mit Ehemann Friedrich Geiger und die beiden Enkelkinder Lelia und Maria. Die Trauerfeier findet am Dienstag, den 6. September 2016 um 12 Uhr in der Süsterkirche, Güsenstrasse 1, 33602 Bielefeld statt. Dr Ulrich Beyer, who had a significant impact on the UEM, has passed away on 29 August 2016 in Bielefeld. U Beyer was born on 3 July, 1936 in Hagen, Westphalia, Germany, held a Ph.D in theology and taught as a lecturer at the Nommensen University of the HKBP in Pematang Siantar (North Sumatra, Indonesia) from 1966 to 1974 on. After his return back to Germany, he worked as the head of the Indonesia department in Wuppertal from 1974 to 1980. Then he left Wuppertal for being Oberkirchenrat (leading church official) in the Evangelical Church of Westphalia, Bielefeld, responsible for mission and ecumenical movement. From 1991 to 1996 he became the Präses (head of a church assembly) of UEM and from 1996 to 2000 he was elected vice-moderator of the international UEM. In all these positions Dr Beyer contributed immensely the development of the UEM to an international communion of churches in Africa, Asia and Germany, being introduced 20 years ago. The idea and the work of mission has been newly defined by him. Referring to his merits spread over the church levels and his long and confident engagement, Dr Ulrich Beyer will therefore always be remembered will great respect. Dr Ulrich Beyer leaves his wife Renate, his daughters Annika and Susanne with her husband Friedrich Geiger and two granddaughters, Lelia and Maria. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, 6 September 2016 at 12 o’clock in the ‘Süsterkirche’, Güsenstrasse 1, 33602 Bielefeld. (py)

Heute morgen bekamen wir von der CBCA Nachrichten über ein neues Massaker in Beni, das schon am 13. August verübt wurde. Darum haben wir gerade einen Gebetsaufruf verschickt. Hier ist er in englischer Sprache: Dear Sisters and Brothers, Only today, we received the following information from CBCA: “We would like to inform you that on Saturday, August 13, 2016 over forty people were brutally killed around the City of Beni, North of Goma and many others seriously injured. Just like in the past, the method the assailants used is similar to that of Boko Haram or AI Shabab. The massacres occurred just a few days after President Kabila had visited the area and had had a meeting with the President of Uganda concerning Ugandan Rebels of the Allied Democratie Forces (ADF) who generally are held responsible for repeated massacres in the area of Beni, at the border with Uganda since October 2015. Until now, over thousand people have been killed but neither the Congolese Government, nor representatives of the United Nations based in the country have been able to give credible explanations why both the National Army and the UN troops have not succeeded to neutralize the perpetrators of those massacres. But some analysts within the country and from outside are of the opinion that Ugandan rebels are not the only authors of these massacres, but that sorne officers of the Congolese army also share the blame. ln fact, a recent investigation done by an American organization, indicated that some officers from former rebel movements, who were later integrated in the National Army, have been cited among the perpetrators of killings in the area of Beni. Parallel to the insecurity situation prevailing in Beni, in the southern part of the Territory of Lubero one observes since the last two months the resumption of conflicts of an ethnic nature. But in fact, repeated fighting between armed groups composed of members belonging to local ethnic groups, is at the origin of those tensions. The UN troops as well as units of the National Army based in those areas appear to be incapable to combat the presence of those armed groups. Several people from local communities believe that UN troops cooperate with armed groups and even supply them with weapons and ammunitions. This has brought a lot of suspicion and even animosity towards UN troops.” CBCA has called for political and financial support, but we also ask you to pray for the church in the midst of these conflicts, and for all the victims and their families. Let us pray that God will bring peace to this troubled region!

Dede und Nina nehmen Anja Cours in ihre Mitte. Und auch der Sport kommt bei uns nicht zu kurz... Projektchor: Schüttorfer singen auf Kinyarwanda

Francois de Paule Gahigi, derzeit Süd-Nord Freiwilliger der VEM, hat in Schüttorf einen Projektchor mit Musikstücken aus Ruanda gegründet. Proben finden jeden Donnerstag ab 19:30 statt. NRW-Tag 2016

Unser Team für die Teilnahme am NRW-Tag 2016 steht nun fest: Wir sind am Samstag + Sonntag, 27. + 28. August 2016 dabei und feiern gemeinsam 70 Jahre NRW. Unter dem Dach der Kirchen in NRW, am Mannesmannufer in Düsseldorf am Rhein, präsentiert sich die VEM und vor allem das Freiwilligenprogramm. Ehemalige Nord-Süd Freiwillige sowie aktuelle Süd-Nord Freiwillige werden zu Gesprächen bereit stehen. Wir freuen uns sehr auf dieses große Fest! (cd)

Am Samstag, dem 20. August 2016 findet das Elisenturmfest „Rund um den Elisenturm“ statt. Die Archiv- und Museumsstiftung der VEM wird gemeinsam mit der VEM vor Ort sein und Mission damals und heute präsentieren – in diesem Jahr mit einem besonderen Blick auf das Reformationsjubiläum. Wir freuen uns auf viele Besucherinnen und Besucher (cd).
